Re: Neighbor stole my cookies

[ Edited ]

This wouuld seriously make  me question whether any of the money she is collecting wiill ever make it to the homeless.  I think you should check with the church; I see possible embezzlement.

This is a nice churchgoing lady?  Not very Christian of her to steal your food!

@Carmie

Yikes!    Just how old is this woman, anyway?

My first reaction would be to confront this woman, but I think I would go to her house with even more of the cookies she pilfered and say that since she obviously liked them, you thought you'd make some just for her .... and watch her expression.

I agree that it's good to never leave anything valuable out (such as your handbag) but who would ever guess someone would steal COOKIES?    It's so sad that it's actually funny.

Well, I guess the moral of the story is never leave someone alone in your home!

Re: Neighbor stole my cookies

So, people don't feel compassion for those with dementia?

Wow.

That's very, very sad.

Why assume the worst of this woman?

IF she has dementia, then she deserves compassion, not vilification and condemnation.

"I have known this lady forever and she would never do something like this."

You hear this all the time from people who find out their neighbors are caught in some sort of crime.  Especially pedophiles, killers, embezzlers & fugitives who have been "hiding"  for decades in those "things don't happen like that here" neighborhoods.

Like your husband, I would have confronted her.  A thief is a  is a thief.  dementia?  Yeah, right! icon_rolleyes.gif

Touchy situation but I don't think I would let it go without a mention.   In doing so,  you're condoning it and telling her it's okay.   It'll happen again to someone else if not you,  and it may be something less noticeable but more valuable.

I'd let it go too. If she has dementia  the poor thing  has enough to deal with. You will just  know in future not to leave her alone

I wouldn't want the food back either

Re: Neighbor stole my cookies

Guess I am in the minority, my first thought would be an honest mistake.  As she was out collecting money, perhaps others had been sharing small gifts of baked goods with her.  Maybe where they were placed she thought you wanted her it have them.  It all worked out in the end.

@Plaid Pants2  No need for the attitude of condemnation toward your fellow posters.  You are so harsh leaping to your judgment of them.   The OP doesn't know that this woman has dementia - she "can't help but wonder" if she does.  So no, I don't know that she has dementia and therefore feel no compassion for a thief.  You certainly read a lot into people's posts and think the worst of your fellow posters.  Why not give them the benefit of the doubt - show some compassion yourself before leaping to conclusions about posts..

Re: Neighbor stole my cookies

If she would take the cookies and essentially sneak out I would be questioning what she is actually doing with the money she is collecting.
