I thought so too except my mind immediately went to hot pink!
@Biftu I understand how you feel. The same thing happened to me.
Throwing no shade, but some people don't have an original thought in their head and have to copy.

Definitely-paint colors on houses can't be trademarked, copyrighted, or patented. So they're hardly "intellectual property".
I can't imagine going around a neighborhood with paint swatches either asking your neighbors if they are ok with it. That's bizarre to me, you own the house you can paint it any colors you want. Of all the things that could possibly affect your property value that is way down on the list.
No man is an island unfortunately, so unless one can afford a private island one has to just live with duplicate paint colors.
I also don't understand why the OP thinks this neighbor should have gotten her permission to paint his house a similar color? Would the OP have said "No, pick another color" to the neighbor?

@bikerbabe I missed the "toast."
I bet that was a real barn burner. ![]()

She's referring to my post( not the OP's) where I said an old neighbor of mine showed us (her 3 other close neighbors) the paint color chip she was planning on painting her house for our input before she did it. I just thought that was extremely considerate of her....

If my neighbor asked me, yes I would have said "pick another color."

@icezeus wrote:About two years ago I decided to paint my home. I live in tract housing in the suburbs, which for those unfamiliar with the term are all similar homes with slight variations. For instance I live in a one story but some of the models are two stories, number of bedrooms can differ, as well as the garage (2 or 3 car).
The sun is brutally hot and it was just washing out the color of all of the homes, slowly neighbors for the last few years have been repainting.
The point of saying this is that when I picked the color of my house I copied a neighbor that was several houses down and on a different street. I actually took my painter there to make sure he could pick the right paint samples for me to choose from. I did it because I love the color that they chose, so take it as a form of flattery.
I would not let it upset me.
@icezeus I think, for one thing, your situation is different because you copied colors from a house on another street. I would probably do the same and not feel bad about it. For another thing, no one has ownership of paint color combinations.
Having said that, I would never copy my next door neighbor's house colors. I might switch it up a bit...a different shade of gray with a black door etc but would ask the neighbor if that was a problem. To not is kind of rude IMO.

@spumoni99 wrote:We live in an HOA and are given 17 choices of color pallets and no direct neighbors can have the same color, a lot of people complain about HOA's but the neighborhood looks as good as it did when we bought in 96.
This. We have lived in 6 different HOA neighborhoods. We built a home in 2 of them and were not allowed to use the same brick or paint/siding color as direct neighbor. Even the suburb I grew up in back in the 50's had rules about house paint colors. There are plenty of complaints about HOA's, but they do maintain the curb appeal of a neighborhood and thus your property value. As for OP, yes I would be very annoyed if my next door neighbor copied my paint inch for inch.

@J Town Girl I love a house painted white...can't imagine a black one.

I would take it as a compliment and be glad they didn't paint it some horrible color that was an ugly contrast to yours. A friend lives in a community where 80% of the residents used the same color trim on their homes. One saw it and loved it and then it just went on from there. We once built a home for someone who picked out the house from a portfolio we had put together. When it came time to ask them to choose exterior colors, they said "just the colors on the drawing", they didn't know they needed to make that choice!

@RetRN wrote:I can't even believe this post is for real. They may have been planning on that color for a long time. You seem to think the paint color is exclusive for you only--guess what? People are free to paint their homes whatever color they choose.
This may be true, but if I had been planning to paint my house a certain color for a very long time and in the meantime my next door neighbor used that color for their house, I would come up with a Plan B house color when the time came for me to have the painting done.
(Just noticing how very long that sentence was.)
