I think that Imaold hippie reply was harsh.

You are looking for something to say to a beloved family member.

All of us will be in that situation and will be struggling on what to say.

I was looking at a get well card that said Thinking of you and wishing you a peaceful heart today.

Another card had wishing you buckets of sunshine. I not sure if this is acceptable but you could combine the two and sign it with your -- Love and warm hugs.

 I would tell her you are sending very warm and loving thoughts to her. Wish her a wonderful birthday and that your wish for her is for every day to be a good day. Someone sent me a similar message on a beautiful card when I was in dire health cirmcumstances and it meant so much to me. I still have it and it was sent years ago. Prayers for her and for you and your family.

Both of those sentiments were what I was searching for in the middle of the night! Finally I settled on something to the effect of "Have a sunny day for your birthday. I'm sending a lot of bright yellow thought waves your way for a peaceful day!"
