ETA: OMGosh people are overthinking this. It was thrown away. It was considered "trash". I don't even know if it was against the law to open it as it was thrown away. I don't know the rules. Just put it under her darned door. Geez....the drama..

I wouldn't have opened it anyway, but it is what it is at this point.

Write "opened in error" across the flap, and deliver to her mailbox or her door. You did make an error (an honest one) when you opened it.

that's what I thought too. Someone else got and instead of delivering it, they threw it away.

""Geez.... the drama"" my eyeball. It is against federal law to open someone else's mail. Period. She didn't make a mistake. She acknowledged that she deliberately opened someone else's mail. It would have been a mistake if it was delivered to the OP and she opened it without noticing that it wasn't hers.
