Why give it a thought if you think it's so gross?
The Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest has been held at the original location on Coney Island most years since about 1972, usually in conjunction with Independence Day.

I don't know how they can stuff their faces until they are about to puke. Doesn't sound like very much fun.

Lovely typical wasteful entitled American tradition. Goes well with the other human tradition held on this day, which disregards all other life in this country.

There was a hotdog eating contest one Friday night, at the school where I once worked. A boy began choking. Our doctor's son was on the football team so the doctor was in attendance. He sprang into action, hopped a fence and got to the kid and performed the Heimlich Maneuver on him. A scary event for sure.

I read an article about 'behind the scenes' with those 'eating' contests, saying each participant has a barf bucket beside them.
That seems like cheating to me, since they only momentarily eat the foods!
I would never want to watch an eating contest, all that barfing would make me barf, LOL!

I have to agree!! I couldn't eat more than three if I tried...if I went beyond that I would have to vomit. I can't imagine why people do that to themselves!

Competitive eating events are held worldwide involving all sorts of food.
Entrants can win top prizes of $10,000 to $30,000 or more, so a nice living can be earned for a professional.
I find Nathan's exciting!

So, the contest is to stuff hot doggies in their face and then… throw them all up?
Only in America can you turn bulimia into a monetary contest.
