A few years later,IBM invented the Selectric Typewriter, which used a "golf" ball gizmo which had all the letters and symbols- and when typing, the ball hit the paper.
At my first job after high school, in 1959, I worked for a company on Wall St. that invested money in the stock market for the rich. Most of the memos I typed, needed many copies, so I put carbon paper between each page.
@kivah I did the same, I learned Gregg Shorthand, graduated HS '60, went to Jr College (what they were called then), Medical Secretarial-AA degree and got a job at NIH 8/63. Mimeograph machines, ditto machines, manual typewriters, carbon paper, tissue copies, IBM Selectric. Worked 6 yrs, resigned, went back fulltime in '84 and had to go back to school to learn "word processors", big machines with printers in sound-proof boxes. Upon retirement in '13, quite savvy in computers!
.
Does anyone else bang the heck out of their computer keyboards because they learned on an old "upright?" I just can't be gentle. I watch the gentle, smooth touch of younger people, and then I look at my fingers popping up and down and have to laugh.

White gloves and white ankle socks trimmed in lace. Remember chapel veils worn in church? If a woman or young girl forgot to wear something on their head, there always seemed to be one of the elder women of the church who would politely tap you on the shoulder and hand you a kleenex to cover your head!

I was taught Pitman because I went to high school in New York. I got the highest mark in shorthand and typing in the class. My last job as a secretary ended in 1996 - and I then worked part-time jobs, temp jobs, permanent jobs. I took a few computer classes but I NEVER learned it -- just faked it at some jobs until they realized I didn't know what I was doing. Some companies let me go - and other gave me work other than computer. Don't know how I survived all the bad jobs I had in the 1990s - now happily retired.

@kivah Use my shorthand today for it is ingrained and when trying to get info fast, I use shorthand since it is like riding a bike--you never forget! I liked word processors introduced in the 80's but much preferred when computers came on the scene. My then supervisor was up on new technology and got me a computer (think it was IBM) although I had to share with some of the fellows--it was popular. I was able to take computer courses and learned how to add memory chips and make changes to the PCU. At that time I was an editorial assistant, edited and prepared medical manuscripts for publication. Loved computers and still do today. I do not have a TV, stream from my computer and use other technology all the time. The one thing I do not like is a cell phone; have and use Amazon Echo, use Tap when gardening, have Blink security cameras and Ring doorbell, so I like technology but it changes daily. Glad you are enjoying your retirement for it should be enjoyed and welcome. I worked to 71 to accumulate enough for financial security. Retirement has made me feel younger than ever and I am enjoying every single minute.......

OK, I'm going out on a limb here; and am considering all or most of the people on this thread are women. Does anyone remember wearing long panty girdles and sliding your combs up the side of the leg to make sure you had it ready to use at any moment? First of all, why would you wear a girdle when you are a teenager?? To hold up your stockings of course. I'll never be able to undo the misery!
