Any northerns remember plugging in
your car in the winter so it would start in below zero weather. Upstate NY we use to get cold spells that lasted at least 2 weeks at a time

Yes I forgot about that. I think it tasted better in glass

A previous poster mentioned using vegetable tins. When I read that I thought about the orange juice cans, so it wasn't just PA. It was happening in CA, too.
I missed that post. What were we thinking! I can still feel those stupid cans pressing into my head as I was trying to fall asleep.

I never used the cans but I knew those who did. When I wanted curls I used those dreadful plastic curlers from the dime store. I recently found a whole package of pink ones -- unopened -- in the closet. I'm sending them to the Smithsonian.
Now those really hurt to sleep on!
And then there were the hot rollers. I'm surprised I don't have permanent scarring from the burns.

I was a stenographer - I sat at the desks of various people I worked for and they dictated correspondence/memos - and I took it down in Pitman Shorthand and typed it out. I was called a Secretary!!!! In high school and at my 1st job, I typed on a manual typewriter, where the carriage moved from right to left and then back.
A few years later,IBM invented the Selectric Typewriter, which used a "golf" ball gizmo which had all the letters and symbols- and when typing, the ball hit the paper.
At my first job after high school, in 1959, I worked for a company on Wall St. that invested money in the stock market for the rich. Most of the memos I typed, needed many copies, so I put carbon paper between each page.
