Hi @Pezzie Great, Interesting topic! ![]()
heh.
One of my Degrees is in Math.
Math is not really about the numbers, per se, as much as it is "Training the student about a Logical Process of Working thru, Solving Any Problems."
The numbers, and X, Y, Z are merely only the tools to teach this "Logical Thinking Thru," but that's the goal.
I'll be willing to bet that most of us who have had this Math, have internalized that "Process of Logical Thinking Thru" without even knowing it, & we use it later in life, unknowingly!! (just perhaps not by literally solving Equations, or Plotting on a X, Y Curve) heh
I wasnt good at World History. But I did get good grades, merely because I was, so scared I'd have to repeat it!! ![]()
(Now, Wikipedia has become my friend.)
I didnt like the Frog dissection either! YUCK
Didnt like Home Ec. One test, the meat cut labels were covered, & we were spozed to guess the meat. WHY?? The grocery meat label always tell us what it is!! Illogical.
And climbing that Rope! Forget it!
Same with "Field Hockey."

I use Algebraic formulas every day in my profession.
We are always solving for "X" and I enjoy doing it by hand.
If I had a compass I could still bisect an angle, but have never needed to do it.

@bikerbabe FORTRAN!!! Man did you bring back memories. I remember learning that. But sadly did not go in to computer programming so I never really put it to use. I did not take Cobol I think because after Fortran I was traumatized lol. I had a hard time in that course. Got through it but developed a healthy respect for programmers for sure!!!

Shift stick driving, never again! Bought a used Toyota Corolla in the '90's really cheap with low mileage, only thing is that it was stick, hubby said it was easy to learn and taught me how to drive it, I kept grinding the gears, I was so glad to finally sell it after 3 years, only drive automatic now.

Like so many here, I never caught on to Algebra, Geometry, or Trigonometry. The maths and sciences just flew right over my head. I loved business courses I took as fillers and became proficient in shorthand to the point of being able to take 140 wpm. When I first started out working in the early 70s, back when people actually were needed to take meeting minutes, I was pretty much in demand.
I also took French (4 years!) thinking I would one day travel to France; never in my wildest dreams would I ever think I'd need to learn Spanish. Yes, I didn't make the best decisions throughout my life. Never got to France...

When you say PE...do you mean you don't see a purpose to exercise and moving your body? I loved PE...loved it.
In my world I didn't need two periods a week in school to do that. Power walking with my grandfather, biking with friends, skating parties at the local skating rink we're my preferred ways to move my body and they were fun and natural part of my teenage life. No ugly blue gym uniform required. I actually gave up gym class in junior year. I gladly took the F for not attending. I studied in the library or an empty classroom. No college I applied to cared about an F in gym although it came up during one interview so I told the truth. I didn't need gym classes so I didn't go. The interviewer looked at me and said "time management".

Speaking of square dancing, I also learned it in school. But, my two older siblings were members of a neighborhood square dancing club. They would practice at a neighbor's house and I remember going to watch the group practice. They must've gone to competitions because they had square dancing outfits. I was too young to be in the club and it was disbanded by the time I was a teenager (hey, it was the 60's, rock 'n roll, lol).

Without high school calculus, I could not become an astronomy major in college. I had wanted to be an astronomer since age five.
I got As in every other math class I ever took. I honestly believe there was a problem with how algebra was taught back then.
@PickyPicky3 I so agree with your last paragraph. I think a teacher can make a big difference. Case in point, I have a cousin who struggled with calculus. He eventually got a new teacher. He had a better way of teaching the subject and my cousin's light bulb in his head turned on and he did well in it. He then went on to become a doctor so he did all right for himself.

Omg..lol. I forgot about Home Ec. Lol. I found it irritating and a waste of time but I participated. It was in 9th grade and the big joke amongst my friends was that on Awards Day, I got the Betty Crocker Future Homemaker award. I was a combination of amused and embarrassed. Even my family thought it was hysterical because I was definitely NOT a future homemaker. Whatever homemaker skills I had were actually life skills I earned from helping out at home my whole life.
