A new NYC ordinance, known as "Skip the Stuff" becomes effective today.
It prohibits food establishments from adding utensils, napkins and condiment packets to take out and delivery orders, unless specifically requested by the purchaser.
Food order apps must default to no add-ons and the buyer must enter the request.
Makes sense to me, considering the large number of plastic utensils disposed of annually. When I have take out to bring home I use my own utensils and I have basic condiments.
For Chinese I'll have to remember to request condiments.
I've read that New Jersey is considering something similar statewide.

Do you still PAY THE SAME for the meal?

I'm all for it - I always mention no forkk/spoon - but sometimes I forget
I also have a pound or 2 of ketchup in packets - dont need anymore

I hope the establishment asks the customer if they would like condiments/utensils. With takeout many people are on the go or at lunch and might require these items, especially not knowing of the "skip the stuff" requirement.

In the end if you do ask for a condiment or a dipping sauce be prepared to pay extra for it.
You can pretty much guarantee it won't be a nickel or dime that they will charge for it either.

I purge my ketchup and mustard collection periodically.
I will use any napkins and plastic utensils included in my orders.
Note that the Ordinance doesn't pertain to self-serve utensil and condiment stations. Food establishments that don't currently use them may set them up.

I think it's a good idea since many just bring take out food home and use their own utensils. I do.
However there are times when you need them. I hope the customer is asked and told about this new rule.
When NJ started their rule of not giving bags at checkout a few years ago, shortly after the law was passed I was at a small food establishment making a purchase of several items. I can remember how the clerk just gave me a doppy look since I was not familiar with the new rule (I live in PA).
Fortunately I have a reusable bag that I keep in the car and went out to get it.
When rules change not everyone is aware of them and they need to be told about it.

@Desertdi The meal should be the same for all; the best way to persuade the most people to avoid walking away with unneeded extras would be to add a small fee for those who do want them.

It makes total sense to me, since I "Skip the Stuff" anyway.
That's the first thing I get rid of, as I can't stand plastic utensils.
Good for NYC~~~

@jackiejenny are you telling them to keep it or are you bringing it home to throw away? If it's the latter you really aren't skipping the stuff .
