NYC - First Time Visit - Must See?

I've never been to NYC. My daughter wants to go so I thought what the heck, go and spend a fun Mother/Daughter several day trip. Maybe over the Christmas break. We will probably get so lost, that part kinda scares me. But figure I can hail a cab and take it wherever we want to go. We do lots of other traveling but not that much on our own just the two of us.

Where to stay? Recommendations?

Must try to eat @ places? Recommendations?

What else . . .would love to see Beauty & the Beast but I don't think it is playing anymore.

I was thinking we could leave Dec. 26 or maybe 27 and head back home by the morning of the 31st at the latest. No NYE in NYC for me.
