I have friends, one a helicopter pilot (who has lots of hours in the air) and an airplane pilot friend, both of whom have flown in and out of that airport many times, and they both say that the main problem is the way the airport is laid out and directs traffic and that it should be fixed, that there have been many, many near crashes through the years.  Every pilot that has flown in and out of there has complained about it.  Yet nothing is done about it and it has been a problem since the 1990s.

However, the helicopter pilot says the pilot in the incident where the female was piloting was the military's fault for letting her fly that helicopter because of her lack of experience, that she should have had a real pilot and she could have been a co pilot.  I am not going to divulge any more than that because he would not want to have to answer to higher powers.

@Nonametoday  -  The stories I'm reading is that the pilot was male.  Why is your friend saying the pilot was an experienced female?

@San Antonio Gal You are not a political poster as I remember.  This is deeply political and unfair to a trained pilot.

Sorry...I was warning you because I wasn't sure if you knew the political impact of what she's alleging.  @San Antonio Gal

@tansy  -  I'm talking about the family that lost their lives on April 10th including the pilot.

DCA:

The underlying problem is too much flight traffic, mixing commercial and military in the same airspace. Airport authorities have begged for help for years and Congress just ignored it and kept pushing for more flights, more destinations. And-in chronic nationwide shortages in ATC and we shouldn’t be surprised.

Blaming solely on any pilot is myopic. It’s a systemic failure.

There have been repeated incidents and near-misses there for years. Pilots hate that airport.

I viewed the incident on the news casts.

It must have been more than horrifying to the adults as the chopper turned upside down.  There were moments when they had to have known their peril.  Just awful.
