Re: My trip to Alaska

[ Edited ]

I took a similar trip in 2000 but our trip was about 3-1/2 weeks through Princess.  We left toward the end of July and returned in August.  I think there were about 14 in our group. We started in Fairbanks and did some of the same activities as you described.  The worst part was having to pack 2 suitcases - one for land and one for sea!  The best part was my cabin mate loved to fish and she took one of the side trips from the ship and caught 3 huge salmon.  She had the chef cook 2 of them and serve them that night to our group.  You will never want to eat any other salmon again after eating it fresh from the sea!  I believe she gave the other one to the crew.

I remember that our weather was quite beautiful and 24 hours of daylight was something I had never experienced before.  All of the scenery and flowers were beautiful.  The glaciers were something to behold and we did see a few whales.  And, of course, I treated myself to some gold and jade jewelry!

I haven't looked at my photos and other memorabilia for a long time.  I think I will do that soon. i am so happy  I was able to make this trip!

My first cruise (also with Princess) was to Alaska and I loved it so much!  It was all so beautiful.  Spent a day in Glacier Bay and visited several towns along the coast.  We actually cruised out of San Francisco on a 10 day, so the first couple of days was getting up there.

One fun thing was that the Pacific Princess (from the Love Boat show) was also in port at one location and we got to go inside and check it out.  It was fun recognizing parts of the ship from the show.

I was there in early September so it was a bit cold in some places, especially Glacier Bay, but it was clear weather and sunny most of the time.   As one who likes cool/cold weather, of course, I was loving the weather.  Smiley Happy

I highly recommend going to Alaska and Princess was my favorite cruise line.

@chickenbutt @Katrinka23 I also went on Princess (not sure if I mentioned it).  I had read that if you caught your own fish that Princess would prepare the fish for you. That sounds great!

@Katrinka23  I agree about the two suitcases.  For me it was hard and I felt like I was wearing the same thing all the time since we could only use a carry on size in the land part. Thank goodness the ship had a laundry room!

Two weeks is my limit.  I don't like to be away from DH for too long for one thing.  I bet you saw a lot in 3 1/2 weeks!

@haddon9

We sailed on the Sun Princess but  I don't think that ship goes to Alaska any more only to the Caribbean.

Of course, my trip was before cell phones so  I had to use a real camera!  But  I was able to capture a lot of scenery in a panoramic view.

Thanks for bringing back a lot of wonderful memories of a special trip.

@haddon9

Thank you for sharing such a great experience.

One of the first things that came to mind from your photos is the scent of the air in a pine forest in cold weather.

Not easily explained, and nothing like it anywhere in the world.
