I don't get the big deal if they were venetian blinds. Are we blind shaming now???????????

I lock my doors now, hardly ever did when I lived in the country years ago. A lot of towns now have a heroin epidemic and people will steal whatever they can get their hands on, whether they know you or not. Sadly some times they do know you and what you have.

When we bought our TV and other electronics, my husband takes the boxes to work and uses the dumpster. I don't want to advertise those things by putting them out for the recylcling truck.
I always shake my head when I see a big TV box out by the curb. I think it's an open invitation...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and prepare for some possible negative remarks.
According to what I have seen and read, if you wake up during the night with noises in your home, you should have a plan in place. I think it's good advice.
Keep a charged cell phone in your bedroom at night at all times. Have a strong lock on your bedroom door and immediately lock it. Call 911.
Now I realize not all are in my situation, where the police are a couple minutes away. Also, our bedroom is on the second floor of our house.
A friend whose DH is a retired police detective has also given good advice. Another thing he has said - a big dog in your home is only good for a warning. If someone breaks in your home with a gun, the first thing they do is -----your dog.
Someone who is there to rob you is not going to stay around with a barking dog let alone shoot a gun.

Do you own a garage door opener? Well if you leave it in your car parked in the driveway or on the street, a thief can get to it.
They don't even have to remove it from your car. They can open the garage door, or get the code from the opener and code another opener and get into your garage anytime they wish. They can even code your garage door opener to a receiver from their vehicle.
I keep my blinds closed at night, I have deadbolts on the doors...including the door between the kitchen and garage, my windows are locked and I am careful.
I live in what I consider to be a safe neighborhood, but I am diligent in taking care to protect myself. It's not the people who live in my neighborhood that I am worried about. My community is not gated. Anyone can come in and do harm.
Every now and again, we all read about a home invasion. Just last week an elderly couple were robbed in their home and they were tied and beat up badly. Sometimes these crimes are committed by strangers and sometimes by a friend or family member.
It pays to be careful and diligent so you don't have to live in fear. We work hard to keep uninvited guests out. If they happen to figure out a way to come in our home, they should know that they will have to be carried out.

Bummer on the robbery. I live at the edge of town on a 2 acre lot. We keep our curtains open and the door open, but you'd need binoculars to see in the windows. The windows are in the back and don't face houses directly and it's a hill all the way to the highway.
LOL, our previous neighbors had a big fight once and actually threw all the furniture out on to the lawn. Cops came and everything. We didn't hear a thing.

I'm more surprised by the fact that a truck was loaded up with the stolen items and no one saw it happening. I certainly don't keep my blinds closed at night unless I'm walking around in my jammies.
I'll be sure from now on to forego sleep and stay up and watch the neighborhood when others are sleeping between midnight and 4am.

As with many issues in life, people need to live in reality. One can't live in lala land; that is basically gambling. With the drug epidemic, crime is worst than ever even in areas formerly never affected.
I don't live a life of paranoia or am overly suspicious, but I am proactive in protecting myself and my property. My neighbor and I keep each other informed as much as possible. They let me know if they are expecting anyone at their home when they are away, we do like wise. If we see anyone questionable around, we investigate.
Our doors are always locked, even when we are home. Our cars are kept locked, even in the garage. My home has floor to ceiling windows, these are tinted, making it almost impossible to see inside day or night. We have an elevated deck that has direct access to our kitchen and bedroom. When the house was built I eliminated the steps to the deck.
I know our home is not as secure as it could be, but I am reasonably comfortable with the steps I have taken.
