OP: do you mean credit card or debit card?
03-14-2015 11:43 PM
Oh...I didn't mention, but a few years ago, my Macy's Visa was actually used fraudulently..to the tune of about $1600, before the issuer stepped in and cancelled it. I didn't have to pay any of the charges, but had to waste a lot of my time dealing with the problem, including going to the sheriff's office to file a charge.
So...for me...3 strikes while using plastic...I'd rather use cash now, even if it means missing out on a few $$$ of rewards points. I'd rather be safe.

They seem to be all over it when it happens, and they stop the transactions before I ever find out about them, but it happens way too often. My new card has the chip in it, something else to worry about.
Why does the chip worry you? I thought they were harder to "crack",

YES, and I'm pretty sure at least two of the 3 times B of A re-issued it was because of TARGET shopping ... ![]()

I still shop at Target, but I almost always use cash there, now. I just don't trust that it won't happen again. And you know what? I've learned it's not a problem to use cash.

Its not only BOA. I have 3 credit cards, (2 at my credit union, one at Wells Fargo). One remains in a lockbox that never leaves the house bc it also is solely used to pay utilities and I don't want to have to notify all my utilities if I'd lose it. In the last 4 months I've had all 3 cards hacked and all 3 times I came home to a voicemail to call a number to discuss - which sounds like phishing to me so I always call using number on the back of the card and sure enough, each time its been true.
I constantly go online to check balances on all accounts and credit cards. In each of the above cases, the bank would see tiny charges (which they say is a huge clue) and close down that card. I was told to watch my balances online bc many times these tiny charges don't go thru - they are in pending transactions and eventually disappear. However, last month the card that never leaves home - someone in a foreign land bought a train ticket and I apparently paid for that and the currency conversion fee for about $90 total. This time, because the total was over a specific limit (guessing $50), once it became a paid transaction they would not just wipe it off my record like they usually do for the tiny ones. I had to go online, print out and sign a copy of a fraud report and it had to be mailed, but they were quick, that charge still shows but they added a line to back out the charge. I was told the crooks are getting smarter.

I have a BOA debit card and have not been notified of anything. Wonder if it is a more localized issue? Actually, I have had it for years and have never had any issues.

Until this country stops making CC with magnetic strips these kinds of crimes will continue to happen. We need to use the European technology (chip embedded cards).
Its up to the banks to initiate this kind of CC and not push this onto the vendors.
