Until this country stops making CC with magnetic strips these kinds of crimes will continue to happen. We need to use the European technology (chip embedded cards).

Its up to the banks to initiate this kind of CC and not push this onto the vendors.

Ironically, when my new Wells Fargo card was reissued it had the embedded chip; however the credit union said they were about 6 months away from doing that and I can check to see if it's been done bc they probably will not reissue new cards automatically, but probably as people's cards expire but if I want one sooner rather than later, I can call and request that.

Lotus, sounds like a real nuisance when that happens.

I've been lucky so far. I use a Chase Visa card for basically everything and never had an issue in the 8 years, or so, of using it.

I try to use cash whenever possible. Knock on wood, I haven't had a card compromised.

Jazz the new card has the chip technology. It came with an insert explaining it....the best part was that, even though the card has a chip, NOT all vendors (actually few) have the chip reading card readers.

I got my new card yesterday....tried to "activate" it from work using the phone # provided and it would not activate. After the recording told me it would not activate, it told me to go to an ATM and use my password to activate it. So stupid.

Whenever I've tried to activate a card over the phone, I found I had to activate from my home phone, the number listed on the account.

This is why I only deal in credit cards and pay them off monthly. I do not like using something connected to other money. There is no law currently on the books, though one is waiting for approval, that forces the banks to return money stolen from breached accounts. Most banks do this voluntarily but if you look at the wording of this you will see it is possible you will never see that money again.

Yes, usually the instructions state to call from your home phone.
