I only have on street parking, and I park right in front of my house. In fact, my car is less than 10 steps from my front door. I keep my front porch light on all night long. My bedroom faces the street. I can see my car from my bedroom window.

I went out to my car this morning, and discovered that someone had somehow broken into my car in the middle of the night.

No windows were broken, the car alarm didn't go off.

The low life took a handful of coins that I kept in a cubby that was closed, but they left the pennies on my drivers seat. They also took four cds that were in the center console and my emergency window smasher, which was also In the center console. The center console was closed.

At first I was shocked, surprised and confused.

How did they get in without breaking any windows, or setting off the car alarm?

Now I am just upset.

I know that the homeless like to hang out in the vacant lot next to my house, as I often hear them talking.

I filed an on line police report of what happened.

I live in a busy street.

Right now, I am just so fed up with humanity.

I know that it could've been worse.

I could've had my window/s broken, stuff stolen from the globe box, etc, but still.

It's the principal of it all.

Some stranger was going through my personal property.

I need to get one of those Ring things.

Next paycheck.

SO sorry to hear about his .... well, at least they didn't steal the car!

I've had cars stolen twice ... grrrr  .....  and got both of them back in good condition!

The first time my car was stolen (a Mercedes) the police officer said to me, "Well, at least no one's dead from this.  That's why you have insurance.  If you don't get it back, just remember it's only metal and rubber ...".

It kinda put things in perspective.  Well, as you said, it could have been a LOT worse.

If I were you I'd drive right up the curb and park right under your bedroom window.  To heck with what neighbors or your landlord say about it.

@Anonymous032819

I feel for you.  It's happened to so many of us.  It really stinks knowing someone invaded your privacy.  I'm glad nothing more valuable or personal was stolen.

My thought on something like this is always:  "if these creeps that steal or commit other crimes ever had it happen to them, you just know they would be p*ssed off, but it's ok for them to do what they want to.  So many of us had to work for what we have & they don't give a d*mn!"  I always hope the same happens to them.

@Anonymous032819 ..Along with all the posters I too

am sorry you had that experience.  Sadly we have no way of stopping thieves from violating our property.  By filing with the police department which perhaps others have done, they just might catch this car thief.  Let's hope anyway.Heart

Re: My Car Was Broken into Last Night!

DH used to park his work truck at the back of our property when his garage back there was full and it was broken into several times.  Can't park it in front on the street due to size. He does always keep his personal truck in his garage/workshop.  His garage was also broken in to - broke a window to get in.  Fortunately his tools, etc. were insured.  Received a call several weeks later that a detective located some in various pawn shops and others places they are aware of where stolen items may show up.

I always keep my car in my garage as cars on the street have been broken into and once some one took paint and went through several blocks painting a stripe on the street side of the parked cars.

It was more distressing to think that theives were on our property in the night than it was to losing his work related items which could be replaced.

I would really freak if anyone ever broke into our house.  That would truly be scary.

Re: My Car Was Broken into Last Night!

I had my car and house broken into, so I feel for you.

The problem I'm having is why must law abiding citizens (victims) always have to worry about being violated this way...and it's getting much worse.  What happened to our safety?  No one seems to care about us.

Lately, criminals feel emboldened because many are getting away with it.

@Anonymous032819 First, I'm sorry this happened.  When we were first married we lived in a first floor apartment and had our car stolen while we slept!

What struck me as more frightening is your statement that homeless people are camping out in a vacant lot next to your apartment.

It sounds like you live on the first floor and are truly vulnerable to anything on street level.  Although moving might be considered a major inconvenience, have you considered moving to a safer area (whatever that is)?  Good luck and be safe!

Re: My Car Was Broken into Last Night!

Oh my.  Very sorry that happened. During the times we had trouble with neighbors (they have since moved, thank you god) my husband always worried they would break in to our car.  My husband kept a $100 dollar bill for emergencies hidden in his car.  One day he couldn't find it.  Assumed someone took it.  Several years later, we got a new car.  My husband was cleaning out the old car to return....& he found the money!  He had hidden in another place and forgot about it. But technically, I don't think we ever had.

Re: My Car Was Broken into Last Night!

You accidently left one of the doors open and someone took advantage of that. The good thing is your car was not stolen or damaged and you only lost a couple of CD's.  The lesson is, Check all of your doors when you leave the car.
