slyvia.............you've touched on something that has always bothered me about this joint............the propensity of a vast, well, maybe not vast but a good number of people here, who seem to use the board as a place to feed their need of self importance.........I'm smarter than..., I'm financially better off than..., I have better kids than..., I dress better then than..., I shop at better places than..., the list goes on and on.......when the fact of the matter is...........NO ONE here has a perfect life..........no one here has a perfect anything

life is all about it's imperfections and how you deal with them...........character is about, once those imperfections are recognized and handled how you carry on........how you take that new found knowledge and handle it......if you own it.......if you help others in a similar situations overcome........and if you do that, you do it knowing that in helping them, you also help yourself and you acknowledge that fact to yourself......so in my book sylvia...........you're a woman of character..........at the end of the day who cares what anyone else thinks....you came to your sobriety on your own.....yes you had help, but we both know you can't change a person, they have to change themselves and you did that, congratulations on your new found life.........................raven

Raven---I used to think all the families were perfect. I thought their children were perfect, their homes were perfect. I've certainly learned we are who we are: with warts, and secrets,and odd relatives ,etc I'm so glad I'm part of the vast (one of my favorite words) human family and this board is filled with all the different perspectives and foibles. Thank you for your kindness Smile

First of all Thank you SoftRainDrops and Cakers! {#emotions_dlg.wub}

The OP has taken a post "COMPLETLEY" out of context from another thread.

Softraindrop asked a question and I responded. There was no hostility between us. She posed a question and I answered. It was a friendly and courteous exchange. Pretty simple..,don't ya think?! But now the OP has taken a simple Q&A and turned it into something that it wasn't!

Dear OP,

At what point in that statement was I righteous? All I did was state my elation at never having to be at an AA meeting. It's the same elation I'd suspect many people who go to AA that have been sober for their first few months to many years would feel for resisting their addiction.

Sylvia,

I haven't read the responses to your line, but want to tell you that having been an alcoholic would never be a reason for me to shun you Smile

I'd hope that, as a society, people are better than shunning someone because of that. Most likely, many here have had issues with alcohol or someone close to them has had those issues. I would include a best friend of mine and an uncle.

You are to be commended for your valiant struggle and for being sober for such a long time!

I'm so sorry if I offended you. As I wrote above, I'd never even heard of Alcoholics Anonymous when I had to go there. I believe we live in a spiritual space where we are influenced by good: people. deeds, thoughts. Loving family and psychiatrist pointed me to this recovery. I'm very glad you and your loved haven't been touched by this.

I did not see the original post, so maybe it is out of context, but I think it means, " I am lucky it did not happen to me." Not a slam against those that are not so lucky. You know, like a "it could have been me, but luckily was not". Just a thought.

I agree. This is also the way I read it.

Sort of like, "There but for the grace of God go I." I know how you look at things depends on the road you have traveled, but truly, perhaps this person did not mean it the way you chose to see it. Sometimes the written word does not come across the same as we actually intend.

Perhaps the misunderstanding between Sylvia and Kalypso will be a catalyst for more understanding here of others' struggles (both from this board and in our ""real"" lives).
