Re: Millennials Less Interested in Jewelry Than Prior Generations, Survey Says

We're living on one salary now, buying our first home, paying on my college loan and a 5 yr car loan, raising two children and fine jewelry is the furthest thing from our minds.

For those who are into that sort of thing and have the disposable income, fantastic, I'm happy for you.Really.

Re: Millennials Less Interested in Jewelry Than Prior Generations, Survey Says

LOL who wrote this article?! I'll tell you exactly why Millennials are less interested in jewelry:

1. they know the truth about "blood diamonds" and want no part of it

2. this is a recession and they don't have money to splurge on expensive sparkly things

3. they strive to be "unique" and that's why handmade goods like Etsy are so popular

Baby Boomers experienced the decadent 1980's where "Dynasty" reigned, so of course they're going to appreciate nice jewelry. On the other hand: Millennials grew up with slap bracelets... yeah...

They are less likely to achieve the wealth their parents have. This is the first generation to have this happen. If you're saddled with student loans and no good paying job prospects would you be buying jewelry?

Re: Millennials Less Interested in Jewelry Than Prior Generations, Survey Says

I'm a boomer and I guess I was just ahead of my time! I've never been interested in fine jewelry, or really a whole bunch of any jewelry. Then again, I've never been that interested in accumulating a lot of anything; shoes, clothes, handbags....all the things that women are supposedly in to.

My kids weren't into jewelry and such either, and now neither are my grandkids.

...perhaps because they are young. I don't know anyone who was interested in building a jewelry collection in her 20's or 30's. That's something we women do when we are older and have the money to endulge in it. Millenials are paying off student loans, getting married, saving up to buy homes, starting families. They have neither the money, nor the interest in buying a piece to add to their blue diamond collection or buy a Bronzo bracelet.

Just jumping back in to add. It's not just high end ""real"" jewelry that is seeing sales slump. It is fashion jewelry as well.

"Real Jewelry is expensive...the economy being what it is, food, housing etc...also being expensive...job markets not so secure...they probably consider that an expense they can't justify. Many of the young are into their electronics...I-Pads, expensive phones and it is a trade off and they choose their electronics.

You make a good point. Probably most people here are older than you are, which means more birthdays and anniversaries to get presents, LOL.

When I got my first professional job, I bought myself a solid gold ring with a beautiful rose quartz cabochon. I had one other nice ring, a while gold jade ring my father had given to me.

That's all I had for years until things got better. Now, I have enough. Not really interested in big ticket jewelry anymore.
