Re: Millennials Less Interested in Jewelry Than Prior Generations, Survey Says

Disposable is in - forever is out. You have to update your phone every 4-6 months. Is it broken? No, you must get an update. Funky jewelry is in, wear it a few times and onto the next thing. Fine jewelry has a tone of old fashioned foreverness. No one is thinking of owning something that is precious - resale value etc. They don't want sapphires, rubies or emeralds.

When I was in my 20s, I couldn't wait to get the 14k gold stuff and get rid of my gold filled (whatever that was). I have a 1 carat sapphire with diamonds all around - your cocktail ring. I'm not going to sell it, haven't worn it for a decade or two. I wore it all the time in the 80's but it would look weird if I wore it now (not that it fits on the finger anymore).

I buy sterling silver artisan jewelry with unusual stones, are they precious? No.

My daughter is a Millennial and she doesn't care at all about fine jewelry. I gave her a gold necklace with a pendant of rubies when she was a pre-teen... nice, but she likes other things better, including the Art Deco look.

Those her age are very different, and imo that's a good thing. They're for equal marriage rights, but a lot of the young women aren't interested in marriage for themselves.

Unfortunately, many are saddled with college debt, but they're well educated.

I would suspect that men's suits have taken a hit as well, what with the casual attire worn in companies that are run completely differently from the old models. Quick: Picture Mark Zuckerberg. What is he wearing?

Many millennials use his model for business as their own -- from the personal schedules to attire.

I suppose ladies wear, too, has taken a hit.

Don't forget the dry cleaners. I used to have 4 or 5 with 10 blocks on the main drag. Only 1 remains now.

my daughters still like jewelry, but probably not as much as i do......and not as much FINE JEWELRY. they have some beautiful gold and silver pieces, but overall they prefer costume jewelry at this point. they dont buy it themselves, but they receive them as gifts from me, my mom, or other family members....or they borrow from mom and grandmom. LOL

they are definitely more into handbags, clothing, scarves, and ELECTRONICS. oh, and they LOVE going out to eat at nicer places.

Re: Millennials Less Interested in Jewelry Than Prior Generations, Survey Says

I'm in my early 30's, and I have a TON of fashion jewelry. It's MUCH more "in" than fine jewelry. Plus, many people my age don't have the money for it. Remember, the price of gold is WAY up from when many of you bought your jewelry. Plus, I think many people like to have more options, and many can't do that if they are spending hundreds and thousands on fine jewelry. I love my engagement and wedding bands, and have pearl earrings, but the rest is costume, except for some gold and silver chains and pendants. I have some passed down rings from GGM and GM's, but they aren't anything I would wear on a regular basis. I told hubby the only other thing I'd want is a pair of diamond earrings and a right hand diamond ring. Maybe something vintage or vintage looking. Other than that, I really don't have much need for fine jewelry. Many millennials don't have places to wear these things. And most females I know would rather have a large wedding set that they wear every day, than a bunch of smaller things that don't have much practical use in every day life for them.

Re: Millennials Less Interested in Jewelry Than Prior Generations, Survey Says

I agree with so many comments made here today. There are many reasons why millennials aren't choosing fine jewelry. There are so many MORE things to spend money on then there was for our grandparents. Look at the tech field alone. They didn't have to spend money on any of that kind of stuff. Student loans, definitely. Gold is so much more expensive than it was even 20 yrs ago.

While I do love the craftsmanship and quality of older pieces I can certainly understand why they aren't as popular as they were with previous generations. That is ok with me too, hopefully it will be one less person bidding against me for that Art Deco piece I really want!

You nailed it. It's not just that they don't spend money on jewelry, it's that other things are more important, and tech is definitely at the top.

My daughter recently got her dream job. Now that she's there, they're thrilled she's so into technology, she's already added a lot of new ideas and advancement. They have tech guys available and she's made friends with them all. Her department is now more advanced than any other, and it's because of what she's done and who she knows that can give them what they need. Networking in a whole different way.

Maybe they consider a tattoo to be their jewelry.

Kind of a stereotype, don't you think?
