Miami Condo to be Demolished

Structural engineers have determined that the remaining part of the partially collapsed condo, is too unstable to remain.

So, sometime in the near future, they will demolish it using a controlled implosion.

This whole thing is just so sad.

They haven't officially called it a search and recovery yet, but the odds of finding anyone still alive at this point is next to zero.

Prayers.

I keep wondering if they've allowed the residents of the standing condos get their belonging from them.  I sure hope so.

The lawsuits will be flying like crazy, I'm sure.

I wonder how hard it would have been for the remaining residents to remove anything except clothing and personal documents.

Moving furniture out would have impossible.

How very sad and where are they to go???

eta:  Meaning did they have time to gather some clothing and personal documents, not to go back in.

Obviously they would not be allowed back in.

I don't know if anyone has been allowed to go back in, but remember the elevator colapsed so moving anything large out will be impossible.

I have what is probably a dumb question, but who does a condo owner sue in this case?

Very, very sad.

And no, residents will absolutely not be allowed back in the building! Can you imagine if govt authorities allowed them to re enter and the building collapsed?? Or even a wall fell off, etc.?? No Way!

@deepwaterdotter I would think the developer.  The building was not structurally sound as buildings regardless of their age are not suppose to collapse and developers are suppose to know what the land is made of before they build.

I know they have already started to sue the Condo association for not making repairs sooner.  I will guess they will file for bankrupcy because I am sure they don't have enough insurance to cover all the claims.  I will guess they will go after some of the companies that did inspection work on the building.  I think they will need to wait to determine a cause which could take awhile.

Re: Miami Condo to be Demolished

I'm wondering also who is actually responsible.

Is it possible to tell after 40 years if the building wasn't built properly - or to code? Or can a properly built building deteriorate over time if not maintained?
