My understanding is that Plushenko pulled out so late the other Russian skater didn't have time to prepare.

31 yrs old seems quite old for a figure skater to be competing for an Olympic medal, to many younger stronger skaters.

The other skater was not chosen to skate after a competition for the spot. Reasons given were his age and his experience and skill.
