@hckynutjohn And Christmas used to be a religious holiday. But on the other hand, why shouldn't people enjoy the season as well? It doesn't keep me from the real meaning to me. As a holiday and picnic doesn't keep people from remembering those who served and sacrificed.
It is about values and beliefs at the end of the day.

There are facts and there are non-facts. The fact is that Memorial Day honors those who died in American wars. Period. Saying "there's room for" this or that is of no significance with respect to this holiday.
No one's telling people to wait until the Fourth of July to fire up the grill or eat a burger. But attempting to change the nature of Memorial Day so that it somehow appeals to everyone is ridiculous.

Memorial Day is a national holiday. Of course it is for all Americans. And it has been commercialized with sales for many many years. That's a tradition.
I'm surprised anyone is surprised about this. Seems like the birth of a new fake culture war intended to pit American against American. As if we don't have enough of those already.

Tradition of solemnity turned into commercialization on the backs of our war dead …doesn’t make it right.
Come back and talk to me when you’ve lost a son in combat.
I wish you well.
