I'm not particularly worried about getting a mask; if the virus hits with a vengeance I'll self quarantine. Did but a box of gloves, 6 bottles of Purell, and wipes. We will start preventive measures immediately.

@Kachina624 Hope you are healing and your appointment goes smoothly in March. Take excellent care and pamper yourself throughout this process.
@Kachina624 wrote:@dancingwoman I had Basel cell carcinoma removed and I'm a real mess with lots of stitches and purple bruising. I'm in self-imposed home confinement for several weeks. Have more surgery in middle of March to fix it.
Thanks for all your well wishes.

The CDC doesn't recommend that the general public use masks, but they do advise healthcare workers to use them
N95 respirators are not the most effective way for average people to protect themselves from the virus — the face masks can prevent wearers from breathing in particles as small as 0.3 microns, but coronavirus particles measure between 0.05 and 0.2 microns in diameter, according to a recent article.
However, masks are crucial in healthcare settings, both to protect medical workers and to keep doctors and nurses from spreading germs to vulnerable patients. People who have symptoms of the coronavirus or have recently been in contact with others who might be sick should also wear masks to prevent the spread of their own germs.

@patbzIt is good to always have preventive measures at all times.
I'm glad you are being proactive.
We have better preparations and advice today vs. what little there was for the Spanish flu.
We will be ok. Sadly people will get sick and even sadder people will die. We do the best we can to be safe.
Passengers from the Princess Diamond are quarantined here; and positive passengers are moved to one of the best infection control hospitals in the world. I'm glad they came here and are being cared for.
Let's do what we can for prevention in our own homes and be thankful that those who are ill are being cared for by some of the best in the field.
I have 2 immune compromised loved ones; so I don't take this lightly.
We just do the best that we can.

A new and disturbing situation: in some American cities there are protests against bringing patients to their locale. When did we lose our humanity?

It's fear ...not lack of humanity.I wonder how bad the fear willl get and what will come of it.

GMA devoted a lot of time this morning to Covid-19.
It was reported that if you are NOT sick, unless you have a lowered immune system for some reason, like they used Robin as an example when she got her stem cell transplant, you should not be wearing a mask. Not only are they not helpful but they are creating more problems because they cause people to touch their face/mouth more.
Even the N95 masks aren't recommended for people who are ill because they have to be fitted to the face and if they aren't, they are pretty much useless. People aren't wearing them correctly. And the other issue is, these should be reserved for medical personnel for the most part and if people are buying them to wear when they shouldn't be, this very well may leave those who really need them, medical workers, without them which will really cause huge problems.

@patbz wrote:Obviously, if you don't already have masks, you're not going to find them going forward. I did just order a box of disposable gloves and a six pack of small hand sanitizers from Amazon (didn't look like prices were inflated).
@patbz, just fyi in case you don't know, the CDC is recommending you wash your hands with soap and water. If that is not available, then use hand sanitizer.
I personally think part of the problem with a lot of people is they keep using hand sanitizer on the regular which wipes out both good and bad bacteria and they weaken their immune system.

@patbz I've seen one so far in CA which is quite surprise.
San Francisco has already declared an emergency in that city even though no cases have been diagnosed. Yet the homeless situation in that city, which clearly is a health issue for the homeless and the residents, is ok.
These protest are so foolish. I have absolutely no fear regarding those in my area being treated. And as I mentioned I have 2 family member with health issues which will never be cured.
Those protests - guarantee those are the first people to run out and hoard water, food, masks, etc. leaving those with fewer resources to fend for themselves.
I understand fear of the unknown; but the media isn't helping in some situations. Politicizing the situation isn't helping.
I think of Ryan White sometimes when these situations arise.

There was a clothing designer on CNN last hour & he was speaking up
for his community being discriminated against. The fact
Chinatown business has lagged off something like 50%
is the result of racist ideas. And I'm sad to say, I've seen those ideas
right here in our QVC biosphere. Not good.
