Since SS/SSDI cannot be garnished for medical bills (Federal debt and child support can be attached) Section 207 of SS regulations.

 

I do not know if the outstanding debt can still show up on your credit report.

 

The only income that can be garnished from your bank account is anything over your SS/SSDI deposit, such as other income.

 

It is also suggested to keep your SS/SSDI bank account apart from your spouse/significant other, although not necessary.  Banks should be on top of these regulations.
