Bird mama! I forgot to say that I loved your conversation with the mouse in your house.
Now, a mammal with a long tail........could it have been a weasel? I remember when we use to travel to Indiana, we would see these long tail animals run across the road and we were told it's a weasel.
Tell your sister, I think you are the animal whisperer!

Birdmama, Could this have been your mammal with the long tail??? You have had possums before, if I remember right. Maybe it was a Norway rat. I know they get pretty big. Could have been a squirrel that lost the hair onit's tail to a dog, or ???
Mice and other little critters in the house are bad enough, just don't ever have a raccoon get in. My brother left the porch door open a year ago or so while I was down here in Florida and a raccoon waltzed right on in. They are something else to shush out or a house. Brooms don't work that well. I am glad most of the raccoons that lived near us have gone away and I hope they stay away. I've battled those things over the bird feeders and swear they know every trick in the book and how to foil the best laid blockades, traps and??? I tried to keep them from getting the bird food. I think it was a draw. I sure didn't win, but I gave them no peaceful meals of bird seed and bird peanuts and tree nuts.

Puddles and Possummink - it was a rat. I will be 53 years old this summer and I have never seen a rat that large in real life. I'm kind of relieved that the construction issue that is making me take alternative, somewhat creepy routes to avoid it should be over this weekend.

The bird for the weekend is the Nightjar

Love the bird of the day! We had a Nighjar once and would hear his distinct sound at sundown into the night.
Well, Bird mama, if that was a RAT, then I hope the construction that is causing these animals to appear will end soon! BTW, you are a young chick!

The Savannah Great Horned Owlets, taken today, March 21st., along with Mama Owl. Wow, she's a good mom and Papa's not too bad, though we rarely see him. He does bring food to the nest and Mama usually takes it from him. Sadly egrets, gallinules, and other birds and squirrels are part of the meal. I wish they'd eat salads.

Possum - they've grown so much.
The circle of life is hard to watch. Yesterday I saw some feathers in the yard and walked to the back, just under branches of a pine tree. The neighborhood hawk had nailed a pigeon and waited until I was nearly on it before flying away and leaving the meal. I crouched under the branches just to make sure that the pigeon wasn't RP. That hawk gave me a warning squawk and I looked up, right at it and said, let's be clear here. You are in MY territory and whether or not you eat this pigeon will be determined by me this morning. It just looked at me, like, okay then (lol).
The pigeon was gone, the death did not look particularly violent so I left it behind for the hawk to consume. Since eagles are laying eggs and raising hatchlings early around the country I can only assume the hawks get started earlier too. (Earlier in comparison to sparrows).
I have a large tree in the back that needs to be professionally groomed by an tree professional. I need to make the call Monday for an estimate and have the tree done soon so that any workers don't disrupt breeding patterns.
I've used the same tree surgeon for years. He will have a fit when I tell him to mind the pines. He hates pines, but I have so many families that take residence in the pines, he just needs to get over it (lol).

Birdmama, I forgot to mention that I wouldn't want to come up against a rat like you saw. Living on a farm that also had a lot of pigs and corn cribs, I have seen many rats, but I don't think they ever got as big as some of the rats that have been shown living in the cities like New York. Monster sized rats. Possums are good ratters and I guess mousers, but I don't know if a possum would want a hassle with those huge rats like the one you saw.
I don't let the tree guys fool with our pines and other evergreens for the same reason you mentioned plus the yewshaveberries that the birds, especially the Cardinals, like to eat. The evergreens also give cover from the weather to the birds and turtle doves nest in the Scotch pines a lot. We use White pines as windbreaks.
I haven't started watching the eaglenestscams yet, as I have the owlets on all day. I have checked in on them though. Beautiful birds and huge nests. I hope Wild Birds backs another Barred Owl Nest Cam soon.
One other photo of the owlets for today. A close up of one of the babies' faces.

Very foggy and cold this morning but never fear, warm weather is returning. Hasn't been gone any too long anyway.
Nothing much to write about of interest other than my feeders are once again empty. Those birds sure clean them out quickly but I am not going to fill them quickly - too damp and cold outside, not to mention it is still dark. Perhaps this afternoon I can get it done.
The super nice young people came and finished my windmill and it is sitting in my front yard in all it's glory. Sure hope it works and the gophers leave. May put another one out back as this is a large piece of property. Have several friends with windmills and they swear by them - keep your fingers crossed for me. Also one of the nice young men put on my new steering wheel cover - I could NOT do it. The hands/fingers I now own do not work really well these days. Told them thank you until they were better paid. The young man who fixed my steering wheel cover quickly said, we love to eat. LOL. So I promised hopefully sometime before the end of the week will have them here for dinner - little enough I can do and I appreciate their help. Also loved their cheerfulness - I just do not hear a lot of good natured young people in my house. During that conversation I did hear that cornbread and mashed potatoes were two of their favorite foods - that is a start for the meal.
Have a great day everyone.![]()
