BOCA GRANDE --
A wounded warrior lost more than his catch of the day during a Memorial Day fishing trip.
Jack Wiseman was one of several wounded veterans taking part in a tournament in Boca Grande this weekend as part of the Wounded Warrior Project. Wiseman hooked a big fish, but the fish got the better of him and escaped, pulling off his prosthetic arm in the process.
"I have a special prosthetic that's got difference devices I can hook onto it," Wiseman said. "And all of a sudden the hand snapped off the prosthetic device, still hooked to the rod, and the rod and the reel and the hand went down into the water."
Fellow Wounded Warrior Rudy Salas said the other fishermen teased Wiseman about his big "catch."
"For us, it was funny, and that was the biggest thing," he said. "We said, 'You're gonna be a legend, you're the only guy that lost an arm out here yesterday.'"
The story does have a happy ending, as someone else hooked the same fish - with the rod and hand still attached.
