Mall/JCPenney follow up

[ Edited ]

After purging my husband's shirts last week, I went shopping today to purchase a few new shirts. (I must have donated/tossed 15 shirts).  I"ve had a JCP credit since November, so I decided to get 2 Stafford shirts for him.  The shirts were a total mess, not organized by size or type of shirts.  Cotton mixed with cotton/poly blend, 14 1/2"  shirts mixed in with the 18" shirts, button downs with spread collar, patterns with solids...UGH.  It took me 20 minutes to find 2 shirts of the same type and size, but I was determined to use that credit!  Not one sales person on the floor to help. All the while I thought, "It sure would be easier to shop online!"  Online purchases causing stores to close?  I can understand why it is happening.  Smiley Mad

That's what happens when minimum wage went up to $10.00 - $15.00 an hour. The stores can't afford to pay people to stand around and do nothing but yap and fold shirts, so I'm sure they either let them go or have them work when the store is busier. I've noticed that it's like a ghost town in almost all department stores. When you want help you can't find it, when you don't want help you have to chase them off with a stick.

Well, you could have ASKED the cashier to page someone to assist you.  You could have also ASKED the cashier to page the Manager On Duty.   Why didn't you do that?

Personally, I find it annoying when sales personnel persist in trying to assist me.  More often than not, I know what I want and where to find it.   Of course, many feel differently.   JMO

@Tinkrbll44:

There was no one to ASK for help.  Men's shirts in the BACK of the store, checkout in the FRONT of the store. One person at the checkout with a very long line.  So nice of you to understand.

I haven't Mall shopped in several years...even back then it was difficult to find a sales person to help you...and that was way before minimum wage went up...it was annoying as heck to search out an assistant or to have to walk way back to the cashier or front counter to have someone called then have to walk back to where you were...and many times no one showed up anyway....thats when i started online shopping exclusively..

I don't feel sorry for stores that are closing...its their own fault..i feel sorry for the help...though its part of their fault for being lazy..and unhelpful...

No, not all salespeople are "lazy" and "unhelpful".

When I worked retail, my manager told me NOT to leave the register, so even though I wanted to go out and help the customer, I was forbidden from doing so.

So, blame management, not the worker.

I found the same in our Penny's and also in Macy's last week. I usually go to a further mall from my house where I can shop in Lord and Taylor or Brooks Brothers. The Men's Dept is neat, has sales staff eager to assist and the shirts are well organized. When I have a coupon, they are very reasonably priced at Lord and Taylor. Another good choice is Banana Republic or J. Crew. When I want to splurge on a really beautiful shirt for my son or husband I go to Lacoste. The quality of the men's shirts is really superior..

I prefer seeing what I am purchasing. I don't find on-line shopping as much fun.

Management in any given store has a lot to do with how the store functions. I have three Kohl's to choose between. One of the three has a smaller and in-the-corner area where I need to look that is (1) a mess, (2) only half-stocked, and (3) it's full of sizes that shouldn't be there. I think there is one open register in the entire store. I vowed that my last trip there Sunday would literally be my last trip to that particular store. Both of the other stores are as they should be.

I have tried Penney's again half a dozen times at different stores since their big implosion. I no longer bother to even take a peek. Their clothing is nothing like what it used to be in style, quality or price and there is literally not one article of clothing I have any interest in buying from them any more. It makes me sad, because I used to buy casual work clothes there a lot.

@mac116..I feel your pain

DH and I went to two different JCP stores in two different cities..both were as you described.

We had a terrible time finding what we needed but also discovered that sizing is different that what we are used to....sleeve lengths are different....regular cut, full cut....we must have bought 6 different shirts to get the right fit!  I miss the days when I would walk in, pick up 16.5 33/34 and it fit perfectly!

I did like some of the prints offered but was only able to find 2 that we really liked that were in his size.

No matter what I was paid, I was always very conscientious.  And, we always had very particular managers, too, especially in retail.  Just to keep us 'on our toes', so to speak.  I always appreciated a particular manager, because I was always the same, more or less.  (With a little 'push' here and there.)  ...... I guess what I'm saying is that working folks should make sure that items are stocked and shelved where they're supposed to be.  And also, it's a sense of accomplishment, doing things the right way.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
