At least you had a planned surgery. My two hernia repairs were in the E.R. (20 years ago). When they told me I had a hernia (both times) I wasn't sure what that was!!

I recall being shocked 2 years later when I was wheeled into the E.R. again and being told it was another hernia! I said: "Another hernia"? I couldn't believe it!

Maybe that's why I have no recall about follow-up instructions. As I stated upthread, I had very smooth recoveries from both surgeries and for the second one (ingunal) I was only out of work for a week (I had a very physically demanding profession).

Now, after reading all these posts, I'm realizing that my experiences were pretty easy to recover from but, then, I was 20 years younger than I am today!!

What a thoughtful and generous person you are.

But I'm not sure about the "surprise" aspect of it. Perhaps it would be best to discuss it with her beforehand in case she has already made arrangements with family, neighbors, or friends to provide meals for her. And then you can also find out any dietary restrictions, her likes/dislikes in food, etc.

She is very fortunate to have such a caring co-worker.

@pdlinda Actually my second surgery was not planned. I knew I had an umbelical hernia but I didn't know it was that bad. I was having some difficulty for a couple of days and then it got really painful. I asked my DD to take me to the ER at 8 a.m. and I was in surgery at 10 a.m. It was a strangled hernia and the doctor told me it was a very dangerous condition. People can die from that.
