The Macy's at the local mall about 15 minutes from me,  is one scheduled to close.   I haven't been there for years.   If I was going to go B&M shopping,  I'd go to Dillard's in the same mall.   I shop online.

Macy's is my favorite store in our area.  I always find nice clothes that are pretty and fit well.  I'm retired now.  I always buy my clothing on sale.  I watch for their special offers (Friends and Family, etc.) then buy the expensive purses I love.  Our Macy's is a nice store and I don't believe is scheduled to close.  When they have their great sales, you can't go wrong!

I'm sick about this! Macy's is my favorite department store, even though I haven't lived near one for years. According to the online info, the stores I do shop at regularly when I go on vacation will not be affected by the shutdowns.  (...for now...) 

The downtown Minneapolis store is over 100 years old..a beautiful building with a rich history. It's tragic to me that it will be gone forever.

I think over expansion is the big problem for department stores. If you just have one or two stores it's pretty easy to find unique, well made items to stock that one or two stores.When you expand into a hundred or more sites, you start having to compete with the other mass merchandisers for goods. Instead of relying on craftsmen to create products for you store, you're relying now on factories to create products for your stores and those factories sell to everyone, not just you.

I was a regular shopper at LIt Brothers, GImbels, Strawbridge and Clothiers, and Wanamakers in Philly 40-50 years ago. Each store was unique with unique goods and services. The stores were destinations. Tourists came to town to see the stores. Now Macy's has pretty much bought up every unique department store and made them all into Macy's and you can't tell where you are by being inside one of the stores. They're all cookie cutter stores now with little to no individuality.

Uniqueness is what makes a great department store great. Macy stores aren't unique. They're all the same.

Yup.  That's the store near me, too.  When it closes there will be only one Macy's store left in New Mexico.

I used to love Macy's.

Now I equate it with going to the supermarket.

Long lines, no help, messy sales floor and rude sales help if you can find any help at all and phony sales.

When they practically turned off the Air conditioning that was the last straw for me.
