@lovesrecess, it was her money as well as his. She was involved with the company from the get-go.

I know that they came to Seattle before he launched Amazon. I have no idea how much she did with the company and how much he did. Washington is a community property state, so if their decision was to divide it the way they did, that means she gave up the 50/50 willingly. Otherwise, it would have been split down the middle.

I am just floored that in the 21st century women still think the marital assets are "his" money.

Did anyone else think it odd or condescending that Jeff Bezos said he was “proud” of her for giving her money away? It just struck me the wrong way somehow. He won’t join the club and give away half his money, but comments on her and says he is “proud”, like she did it to impress him?

@Puppy Lips  oh yes me.  Most definitely me.  I have read article after article of how hard he drives the last pennies out of his workforce.  This doesn't surprise me at all.

Re: Mackenzie Bezos

[ Edited ]

Having that much money is a full time job.  You can't leave 70 million in  their finance people.  Sad.  the savings.  You need to invest, and that take great management skills to avoid horrible taxes, and loss as well. Half the time many investors find out too late they have been bilked b  The stock market today is a doo shoot. Investing requires moving things around.  It never ends. To give does them both good.  The joy on the receiving end, and the good it can do is a benefit to society as well as those receiving the benefit.  Good for her.

i think if I were able to donate I would donate to susan love breast cancer research, and an organic/ gmo free healthy food program that delivers meals to all elderly, sick, recovering or disable people regardless of income.  I think I would want it to go in the county I live, but I dont know.  Lastly I would love to give to schools, especially in underachieving, poorer districts to be used in uplifting the children, whether field trips, sports and for the teachers to use on the classroom.

@Puppy Lips  Have you said you were "proud" of someone because you thought they did something to impress you?  Or did you say it because you thought what they did was extraordinary?  Or impressive?  Is there anything complimentary he could have said about what she did that wouldn't be criticized by you?

I wish someone would define "fair share."

Thank you Esme, from what I can tell it's code for somebody else's hard earned cash, shrugs.

Maybe it has to do with all the tax breaks and other concessions given that others would never be able to afford. Maybe it has to do with low wages paid by ultra rich to employees while those employees don't have accountants and lawyers to get them out of paying taxes, etc. Depends on whose hard earned cash is being affected, and some certainly don't have the luxury of getting out of those taxes, etc. or have been given subsidies.

@RainCityWoman  It's called "tax code" or "tax law."  Everyone (the honest ones anyway) follow it.  If you don't like it, work to change it.  Personally I think it's way too complicated and could be simplified so that everyone pays an equal share.  Equal and fair aren't the same things, BTW.  And equal is a lot easier to define.

I don't think he should have said anything at all.  They are divorced.  It was her money to give.  Did he say he was proud of everyone else who gave?
