After dinner on Christmas, I noticed my fur baby had blood in her urine. I decided to call her vet 1st thing in the morning.
On Thursday morning, I found my vet's office is closed until Jan. 2nd. In the meantime, my fur baby threw up, had several bowel movements, & still had blood in her urine. I then called the other vet in my rural small town; they wouldn't see my fur baby bc they'd never seen her b4. What?!
(I have all my dog's records)
I called my SIL who's lived in PA much longer than me, but she barely had a voice & was sick with bronchitis. She offered to wear a mask & take us to an animal emergency place, but I told her to stay in bed & get better.
Then, I called my neighbor who's on winter break from his job. He contacted the vet he uses for his 2 dogs & got an appt. for my fur baby that afternoon. He offered to drive me there, which is in the next nearby small town. I readily accepted.
While driving, the phone rang in his car. It was his brother wishing him a happy birthday. I had no idea.
After an exam, ultrasound, urine analysis, etc. the vet gave my fur baby a Covenia antibiotic injection for a UTI & a probiotic Rx. She's doing better today & on the mend. Thank goodness.
My neighbor found me a vet, left his family to drive us there, & waited for an hour ... on his birthday!
My Christmas neighbor sure is a kind person.

@Desert Lily. Sounds like you struck gold in the "good neighbor" lottery. I'm glad to hear your pup is better.

So your vet closes for a week and has no emergency back up?
Time to find a new vet, like the one that your very kind neighbor took you too.

What a kind neighbor you have. I'm sure you are very grateful to him!
The good news, of course, is that your dog will be fine and that she's just dealing with a UTI. Sounds like your poor little baby was really under the weather!
I'm completely appalled that a vet practice would turn away an animal who is clearly sick and in distress because they'd never seen her before. Exceptions need to be made, and should have been in this case.
Wishing you well as she continues to improve.

A vet does not leave an emergency vet to go to???? Time for a new vet. Wonderful neighbor. I would treat him to dinner.

@Janey2 I ordered special bakery that's being shipped to him & his family as a thank you.

@Desert Lily What an ordeal for you and your fur baby, especially on Christmas. It seems that health emergencies always happen on weekends or holidays, for humans as well as pets.
Even pet healthcare is difficultto obtain these days. Our veterinary hospital that we have taken our pets to for thirty years was sold to a corporation several years ago. It is not the same. They have shorter hours and not open on Saturday or Sunday and only one doctor on duty.
Two months ago, my Maine Coon was sick and had not eaten in three days. I called the vet and I was told that they do not do emergency appointments. (That was a first for me) They told me to take her to an urgent care clinic in the next town.
I wanted them to do an ultrasound because I thought that she had a stuckfurball. They did not have ultrasound. They did all kinds of other testing including ex-rays and IV fluids. They had me take her to another hospital the next day for the ultra sound and further testing. Three thousand dollars later, I found that she has the start of kidney disease, but fortunately no obstruction. After a week, she seemed fine and has been well since then. Getting appointments for pets is as
difficult as getting appointments for humans.
So many hospitals for both pets and humans have closed, in our area. There are just not enough doctors. Urgent care facilities are what we mostly have now. Some specialists are booked for three months, if you need one.
You are very fortunate to have such a wonderful neighbor.
It was great that his vet was able to take care of your fur baby.
I'm glad that she is doing better and hope that she continues to
get better.

I'm so glad to hear that you dog is doing much better!
Doesn't it always seem that these situations come during holidays or weekends? I'm surprised that your vet left no information regarding an emergency. Thank goodness for your kind and helpful neighbor!
In the past I have had to take my dog to a local emergency animal hospital. They are open 24/7.
