Love affair

Have any of you ever had an affair? If so, why? My DIL, after 18 yrs of a seemingly happy marriage ( obviously not), she left my son and two children for another man who treats her like dirt, according to the kids. A friend and someone I used to work with also had a husband who came home and told her he was leaving her because he fell in love with someone else. She is beautiful and smart and the sweetest person who was always coming up with romantic surprises and fun surprises for her now, ex-husband. This past year I have heard countless stories like these. What gives? Anyone have any insight?
