@Moonchilde ... I understand what you are saying. I'm big on Googling. However, sometimes people do Google what they are looking for, and the answer is just plain ambiguous. I got attacked once for asking a question about Comcast. I was told to go to the site and look it up. I had already done that, but the answer was not there. So, I called Comcast and asked. They could not find a definite answer either.

I can count on one hand how often I start a thread here. I welcome the brave people who do and ask questions. At least they start a conversation, which lately have been few and far between...
Google has its place but seeking opinions from a larger audience harms nobody. People are always free to ignore what they dislike and exercise restraint.

@Yardlie, yes, that can happen occasionally, no question. Just me personally, in such an event I'd say "I've already checked on Comcast and..." but I can also see that not everyone would do that - it doesn't come naturally I suppose ;-)

Um not really. I really don't think it takes a lot of skill to ask a question. I Google everything!
But think, way back when - there is a learning curve. I think people don't want to bother or aren't motivated to go through the learning process, for whatever reason. "Refining" takes practice. If you don't practice, or attempt, you never get better.

Not necessarily pertaining to this forum.....but my sister does the same thing....she will look on internet for all kinds of interesting things or videos to post on her Facebook Page but when she has a question on something she will not use her technology to look something up.....so she knows better to ask me because I tell her via online, email, FB, or in person.....Google It! She's practically addicted to her phone but won't use it to look things up.........maybe folks like my sis and others dont know how to narrow searches on topics and they receive so many hits they feel overwhelmed so they prefer to ask.....who knows.... It is kind of amusing.....

@SahmIam wrote:IMHO, often asking someone how to do XYZ gives up info that is more helpful than ANY book or site can provide. I read all the books on childbirth but GIVING birth gave me insight that NO book could.
Same thing when applying for Social Security for my son; I did research and I called and I ordered pamphlets and OMG.... I was lost. I asked here and so many offered advice, help, insight that they had gained having gone through it themselves.
That's the answer for you; We ask here because of the insight from those who have actually gone through it themselves.
I consider your situation totally different, you did your research but after reviewin all the information you are looking for some practical advice based on someone's personal experience.........So maybe that's what people are leaving out when they post a question....that they did search but are all confused by many opposing opinions or solutions found on Google.........Maybe that's @Moonchilde answer!

Sometimes different search engines can even bring up different results.....for example bing vs google ----some differences if I'm looking for an image for my FB page....or I find different articles come up if I'm looking for a way to solve a compter problem etc........

So true.
"Some people scoff at google because it apparently is not a reliable source and is not where the smart set goes for their information."
Reminds me of this State Farm commercial.....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_CgPsGY5Mw
"The posts that I don't like are the ones with the teaser heading."
And the cryptic headings. And lets not forget about the headings you need to be a
to figure out.
ITA....and I love that State Farm commercial from the stand point of "the internet' and the whole "french model" thing.... so funny on so many levels.........![]()

I love internet research for most things; this does not include questions I may have about social security and medical insurance!
If sometimes I find an especially knowledgeable or literate poster here, I can understand the answer to my questions quicker and easier.
The other internet sites I am beginning to dread going to are the ones with TONS of ads.
It is important to me to do my research first, before just throwing it out there for somebody else to do it for me (out of laziness).
That's an excellent point and then so many of the ads out there on websites result in spam email in your inbox even when you have spam controls in place........ads the advertisers say "you had an interest in' where nothing can be further from the truth.....you went to a page that happened to have those ads!!!
