@Moonchilde, believe it or not, when I read your opening post, I knew that you would have to continue to clarify that you were talking about only those questions that had easy and definitive answers, not anything else.

Problem is, you will need to rinse, spit, repeat because either someone doesn't read the thread from the beginning or they didn't pay attention to one of your quallfying posts.

I've often silently wondered the same as you. But my best guess as to the reason someone would pose the question in a thread opener here instead of the couple seconds of googling is primarily to start a conversation, to have a personal connection.

As for those who post within a thread asking an easily answered question they might have -- I don't know. Maybe although they are fairly comfortable on a site like this, they don't quite know how to navigate elsewhere.

@suzyQ3

Bless you, child 😉

Yes, I figure 2-3 times is enough. If I've said it that many times and people are still responding as if I've said something I haven't, it's a waste of time to pay any attention to those who are righteously determined to respond to what I "said" (Not).

People ask all kinds of things on these forums. No one could say "I'm new to googling. How could I look for this (or that) more effectively? Thanks!"

Re: Looking things up online

My best advice for effectively Googling - proper spelling!

The wrong spelling can get you - who knows what for results and maybe something you never expected.

One good thing about Google is that if you don't spell it quite right it will ask you 'did you mean...?' and you can easily get there.

I even use it if I'm not sure how to spell a word.  I put in what I'm thinking and if I'm wrong it will get me that 'did you mean' option.

I remember one day a poster here was frustrated because s/he couldn't find a product on this site.  The first thing that jumped out was that the person was not even (like not even close!) spelling it right.  Well, on this site, the search capability is not exactly stellar so the first thing you MUST do is spell the name correctly.

Then you get into that 'don't correct me' territory if you try to help.  oy!  Smiley Happy  I'll still try to help but then I flinch wondering if I'm going to get a reaming.  Smiley Wink

@Noel7

And as others have mentioned and we all know, the information given out on these forums is usually obtained from the same variety of sources available to all online. Individuals do gravitate to certain sources and discount others due to their personal POV. That's human nature and I think unavoidable. And people should always have that in mind.

On just about any given topic one will find opposing, diametrically different "proofs." Once I post my source (on the rare occasions I feel the need) and people start in on the source (if they do), I'm done. When it gets down to "My source is accurate, yours is biased kwap" I just SMH and Walk On. Because that could go on forever - dueling facts.

@Moonchildeasked:  "My question is - other than sheer laziness and "I don't want to bother, I'll ask a stranger & get them to do it" motivations, why would you not look it up yourself?"

I strongly suspect that for some the answer is as simple as the often overwhelming search returns and inability or unwillingness to read and evaluate what is found.

Some would rather have others do the work then present a synopsis.

Some have done the searching but didn't find the answer(s) wanted so the question is thrown out for others in hope of getting the answer wanted.

There are likely as many answers to the question as there are posters.

@Marp, this is only true when one is seeking opinions.  We all have those.  Factual information is another story entirely.  Facts can't be changed ~ they can be interpreted in various ways but as long as the understanding is congruent to the facts that's all there is.

The question to which I responded is why not look it up yourself.  I stand by there likely being as many answers to why posters don't as there are posters.

Sorry @Marp I only reference one part of your post.  My response to you in that regard is appropriate.

Re: Looking things up online

I think that some peeps are just starting up friendly conversations.  You know, similar to a group of friends or neighbors sitting around, chatting.  Asking 'this' and 'that'.  Sure, we can all sit around with our computers and look up every single thing.  But, that's not much fun, friendship-wise.  Jmo, of course.  'And I've been known to change my mind'......

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Re: Looking things up online

@Moonchilde

Yes!  Thanks for posting this.

I do have to say when I see an interesting topic I know little about

& want to respond, I a.l.w.a.y.s. research before I post.

Sometimes I Google a topic and fall down the perverbial 'rabbit hole'.

An hour later of reading, watching videos, learning, I'm ready to respond.  And w/ some controversial topics. I come back to a closed thread

but I still look at it as a learned experience.

So yes, I don't understand why someone would come here to ask

a question when they could have fun learning on their own terms.

Just wait...a week from now I'll come on here I post something

which counteracts w/ everything I just said.  🙃

Again, thanks for posting!

Hi @chickenbutt!

That's almost my favorite thing about Google, the "Did you mean ... ? bit. It comes in really handy because (1) clumsy fingers, and (2) searching based on someone else's spelling.
