Below is a portion of what was said about them on Wikipedia about the purchase of their home. If true than their father did not exploit them so much that they had not money left for their own use when needed. Also provides info. about the community helping out later. I read the article link you provided @Mz iMac I always assumed the surviving twin could be removed after the death of one. How sad when I read the part "limited time" left.
Later life[edit]
In 1991, after three decades in entertainment, the pair retired[2] and moved into their first independent home in Dayton, Ohio, in a house purchased with sideshow earnings. They were active in the community and lived a largely normal life by means of a custom double wheelchair. Although retired from show business, the twins made numerous television appearances. They appeared on The Jerry Springer Show in 1997, a Discovery Channel documentary in 1998 and a Channel Five documentary in 2009.[5][6]
In 2009, Ronnie developed a life-threatening infection in his lungs, which quickly endangered both twins. After their hospitalization, they required round-the-clock care. Their younger brother Jim and his wife Mary, who lived in the same city, were unable to bring the twins into their home as it was not handicap accessible, until an outpouring of donations and volunteers from the local community assisted in building a special addition to the home.[7] On December 22, 2010, TLC premiered "The World's Oldest Conjoined Twins Move Home", which documented the building process as well as the twins' recovery and their return to the community.[8]

@beckyb1012 I am sure TLC paid them extremely well for permission to document the building & moving into their new home addition.

I had never heard of these conjoined twins before. May they rest in peace.

@Silver Lining wrote:I saw this on Facebook yesterday. It made me terribly sad. There were nine children in the family. Their father put Ronnie and Donnie on display at "freak shows" to earn money to support the family. What a degrading, horrible life they had being ridiculed and mistreated. At least they finally had a few years of a better life.
@Silver Lining ...Do you know for a fact they were ridiculed and mistreated? Do you know for a fact they were degraded and had a horrible life? This is the first time I have heard about the brothers and I would like to read as much as I can about them, would you please let us know where you got your information?
