@jannabelle1 I don’t think the instance you stated (could of vs. could have) is a new grammar problem.  I’ve been hearing people say the phrase this way, since long before I saw the misusage on website chat boards.  

I think there are always going to be people who make grammar mistakes.  They are mistakes....nothing more, nothing less.

Well I am of the opinion that when the English language left the country across the big pond, it was never the same. We do not speak proper English in this country, I don’t care who you are. I’m no expert in linguistics but I think due to the many languages brought and spoken here, each region developed their own spin on English. I think that’s what makes America good, but I do think the only proper English is the Queens English. And that’s my two cents!

I think people are trying to say could've, but when they write it they write "could of"

It is an incorrect spelling of a contraction. Saying could've is correct, same as could have.

I was an English major, but even if I wasn't, the decline of proper grammar usage is appalling.  DH and I have a pet peeve with talking  heads on t.v. who don't even know when to use "me" versus "I".  On this board my favorite peeve is the interchangeable use of "two, too, to" with no regard of appropriate context.

Well... I think there are about 30 different dialects of the English language in the UK.

True, but this was going on when I was in elementary school.  Our teachers told us how these words were often confused and tried to make sure we didn’t make the same mistakes.  

The only difference between then and now, is that now our mistakes are discussed on the internet.  People made the same mistakes back before there was an internet.
