Learn from Mistakes of Others

Said in a thoughtful, hopefully helpful way, as I stepped into my closet this morning and rooted through my clothes looking for simple pants, I regretted purchasing so many clothes for work and play. I got caught by sales, beauty of merchandise, etc. Sorting, putting back each season, etc takes time and effort. Hold back and think over again. Save your closet real estate by being selective. You don’t need multiple colors.

Re: Learn from Mistakes of Others

My closet is a mess, mainly because I have become a collector, not a wearer of clothing. My addiction is Logo. I have way more pieces than I could ever wear. Since I am retired, I find myself reaching for the same few garments to wear around the house and yard. Meanwhile, my lovely Logo tops just hang there, jammed together and requiring pressing before they are worn. I have decided to stop watching Logo shows and hope that cures my addiction.

I sort of take the opposite view because I buy multiple colors of things I love and don't branch out a lot.  So my closet has a high percentage of things I know I love and will wear.

For me the variety, especially in casual clothes, is more color than style.

Re: Learn from Mistakes of Others

My answer has been to find what I like and buy it in multiples after it's been marked down.  I have pared down a few of the "prototypes" that weren't getting much use.

I may never have to buy clothes again!  Well, in a year or two maybe some pj's.  Or I could recycle some of the every day once they get too worn for public consumption.

I've made sure I have 'festive" and funeral pieces, just a few.  I can make it all work.

I was just thinking this morning that I wished I’d saved more when I was working.  I bought more than I needed whether it was tops or shoes, etc.  Much of it has since been donated.  I wish I had all that money now.

Re: Learn from Mistakes of Others

Thanks @Twins Mom   Here is another hope you learn from my mistakes.  I ordered two inexpensive tops that I thought would look cute with jeans.  I don't need them, but they were very inexpensive.  I usually only buy two brands at QVC and neither were those brands.  The tops were lunch time specials and the price was seductive.  They were marked No Returns Available.  Big Mistake!  I'll never do that again.  I'll donate the tops.

How timely.  I spent yesterday going through my closet and purging.  The trunk of my car is filled with clothes for the local shelter.  I am trying to make an effort to downsize everything.

I think it was Tolstoy who said he wrote about unhappy families because happy families were all alike!

That's how I think about our mistakes -  we all make different mistakes, but we all like what we wear often.   For example, I do buy multiples of items I really like and I wear them, so, no, buying more than one color isn't a mistake for me.

What I know about the mistakes in my closet is that almost all of them were purchases of items that were on sale.  I didn't really need that item at the time, but the price was "just too good."  Yet if I'd stopped and visualized myself wearing the garment, I could have avoided spending even the sale price and my closet wouldn't have a whole "someday" section!

My life no longer requires such a varied wardrobe, so now I shop for need within categories - and since there's still too much in the house, I've begun one in, two out as a way to expedite the decluttering.

Re: Learn from Mistakes of Others

My closet is jam packed and much in need of purging. At the same time, I have nothing to wear, because I've gone first up, then down in size.

Mostly, I need comfortable pants.

I'm seriously thinking about buying just a few versatile pieces and getting rid of dozens that just take up space.

I'm leaning toward the Kim Gravel line.

@millieshops Boy this strikes a big chord with me!  I rarely buy much on sale any more--unless it is a basic piece I wear pretty much year around.

I found that buying when clothes first hit the rack and wearing them a lot that season saves me in the long run.  I don't buy as much that I don't need and it all gets worn, doesn't just hang around until next year then I don't like it and won't wear it.  So that is money well spent for me.
