You mean like posters who say something they know is totally obviously snotty and then type lol at the end? AFAIC that's the same as ending a comment with a sneer or the equivalent of * you.

Yeah, that too!  Smiley Wink   'Snotty' is the perfect word to describe that.

@chickenbutt

Do you see just a little bit how your comments to those of us who might inject an occasional "LOL" to make sure readers understand we are joking could be construed as public humiliation.

Since I made the comment in question -

No.

Unless as a reader of the comment you know that you do this - say something snotty and then add a lol - why would you assume it was directed at every person who ever uses an (appropriate) lol in any post, ever?

This is the type of projection/assumption that starts hissy spats on the forum all the time (not that you were trying to do that, I know).

It's a good habit, on forums (and elsewhere) to read, or listen to, *exactly* what was said - no more and no less - and not project what you (figurative you) are sure, or *assume* the other person "really" meant vs *what they said.*

The comments were about deliberately snotty people. It was said that sometimes, snotty people will stick a lol at the end of the comment. Nowhere was it stated, or inferred, that anyone who uses lol in any post is (by definition) snotty.

I don't know anyone personally, but my DH likes to watch CNN in the a.m. and the woman who gives the news (I think her name is Robin) is constantly laughing.  I don't understand what is so funny, but maybe it is a nervous habit with her.

I'm sorry, but I'm laughing at your post.  I couldn't be around that with my personality.  There's no telling what would come out of my mouth.

Oh, I've said a few things. (I sort of need to be around it since it pays the mortgage)

She then ignores me for days on end.

Which is pretty O.K. by me.  Until I have to work on something with her.  Then she does her phony friendly thing and I do my phony friendly thing.

It sounds like nervous laughter, which is the opposite of thinking oneself is funny and clever.  The nervous laugher worries that nothing she says is worthy of listening, or will be taken seriously.  It would be kind if someone could talk to her about it privately, and in a caring way.

OMG, if anyone did that they'd be excoriated.

No, I really believe she thinks she's clever and funny.

I work with someone who laughs after pretty much everything she says. As though everything that comes out of her mouth is oh.so.clever. After being around her for any length of time I just want to say "STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT".

@QueenDanceALot  I believe I know who you are talking about.  She is the only host that I can not watch.   Very annoying---Tries way to hard.

Well, no, it's not a host.  As said, it's someone I work with.

It reminds me of some people who have a permanent smile on their face while you're talking with them. That would be nice if you're telling them good news, but some people tend to do that even if you're telling them something not so nice...such as your car needs new tires, you think you're getting a bad cold, your washing machine broke, etc.

Seriously! How would they feel if they rattled off bad news and you stood there with a smile on your face?

I feel like having someone film these people to show them what they look like.

@Daisy Sunflower  Ok - I have to respond to this one.  They may be smiling because they want you to THINK that they are listening about your tires or your broken washing machine but in all honesty most likely their minds are wandering to their own issues.

Sometimes what we perceive to be major problems really are very microscopic compared to what others are going through.  Especially when we come across chronic complainers.  They're out there.

My boss when he is nervous.  Especially when he's telling you something he knows you will not care for.

When I was in my twenties I worked with a guy.  If the day started with "You look really nice today" I knew he** was not far behind.

Interesting how folks communicate without meaning to.

Not so much laughing. But, I hate listening to people who make jokes all the time in every situation or conversation.  It gets so old their trying to be  funny and making stupid supposingly funny comments.

There is one QVC host who does this..... He is always trying to be funny,( and sadly he is not funny) and if he is not cracking a joke, he is talking about his farm, or his dogs or his Hobbies .....or his this or his that. Like  the world revolves around him. These kind of people just make others not want to be around them.

Funny how different people perceive things differently.

We all know exactly which host you are refereing to, and I feel just the opposite you do. He is funny (most of the time, sometimes just a little corny, but what is wrong with that?), interesting, and a rather down to earth kind of guy. I enjoy any time he  is presenting, or sharing stories about his life.

So much easier to listen to than the hyper over sell of some hosts.
