Las Vegas' Monsoon

[ Edited ]

Heavy rain hammers Las Vegas, turning famed strip into a river

Las Vegas is now in the middle of its wettest monsoon season in a decade after drenching storms wreaked havoc around the city on Thursday.

Pockets of heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across the Southwest on Thursday night, prompting flash flood warnings in southern Nevada, far southeastern California and Arizona. The gusty storms knocked out power to many Las Vegas residents and flooded numerous roadways, including the famous Las Vegas Strip.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced on Friday afternoon that a body was found in a flood wash near the Las Vegas Strip. This was the second body discovered in the same wash near Giles and Mandalay Road. The Clark County Fire Department stated that both deaths were likely the result of people living in the tunnel system that became trapped when the heavy rain occurred on Thursday.

I looked at some video footage on sites that provided it and it was pouring rain into some of the casinos.  One in particular was Circus Circus, I think.  The Black Jack Tables were soaked with rain water and water was getting into the hotels like it belonged there.

I think there was video online of rain pouring into Planet Hollywood.

Yes, perhaps that was the hotel I was thinking of @Desert Lily .  Then I saw a quick video of cars and a bus going through the rain.  The rainwater was just rushing into the bus....

Reminded me of Superstorm Sandy that we had in New York City.

I saw video coverage of water seeping into Hotel lobbies and streets just flooded and damage caused by these downpours.

We have had a monsoon problem in Albuquerque but better engineering to prepare for it.  The mountains right at the east edge of town and city street drain into concrete arroyos which empty into the Rio Grande.

The problem is, although fenced, they can't keep homeless people out of the arroyos under the bridges.  The water becomes a raging torrent in seconds.  The fire department has rescue teams that have saved several people this year but last year 3 people drowned.  We're fortunate that the city is not flat and the water has someplace to go.

Wow @Kachina624 .  Yes water has to go somewhere.  It will always seek it's level (lowest point).  The homeless under bridges and tunnels and things like that are not low enough to be protected from the deluge of severe weather events like we had with Super Storm Sandy.  Whole train stations were flooded waist high.  It was unbelievable.

As a City, we were not and still are not prepared for weather events like this.

@BabyYoda I sat there looking at the clips in awe of mother nature.
