I agree, the Italian skater was just so elegant, she just glided on the ice like she was floating. I think they said it will be her last Olympics, so it would be nice if she could medal.
I agree, I thought Carolina Kostner was beautiful and graceful. Plus, she's from Suedtirol,my family's home, so I would love for her to win a medal. ![]()

I thought Carolina skated beautifully. How interesting that you are from the same place. She owned "Bolero" in her own way. Congratulations to Italy and Carolina, well deserved, although I think she deserved Silver, not Bronze.
I think the Russian's scores were far too high, she bobbled, but congrats to her and the Russians. They hung their hopes on Yulia, it's nice that this lady was able to deliver for them.
Was sad Gracie fell, thought she really had a chance to medal.
Really thought Yuna deserved the Gold.
Overall, lovely performances. Lots of talent for future Olympics there. ![]()

Gracie finished well at 4th. My heart breaks for the young 15 year old Russian who fell under so much pressure. I honestly don't know how they do it.
ITA about Yuna. And Carolina. Both were truly exceptional.

Yes, a nail biter for sure! Between the figure skating and now the hockey game I don't know if I'll have any nails left! LOL

I wonder if Yuna would have gotten higher scores yesterday if she'd skated later? I often think they underscore the first flights because they don't want to set the bar too high for the next groups?
But, then again she might have skated so well yesterday because she skated early and didn't feel the pressure. Who knows. I do think she was the best skater out there both days.

If you look at the base value of the technical programs, Yuna's was worth about 5 points less on paper. That's a lot to give up before you even take the ice. She could have done another triple jump but for whatever reason she chose not to.

I agree, muttmom. With the top skaters so close after the short, giving up that much before you even get on the ice is hard to make up, especially when your competitors are skating well.
I must say I was THRILLED to see Carolina get a medal. She is so deserving. Just a beautiful skater. And what about Polina? My gosh, her first Olympics and her first international skating event and she comes in 9th! I hope she's able to continue to improve over the next 4 years. She's another one that's beautiful on ice.
It was also great to see Mao skate so well in the long. My heart went out to her yesterday and it was so nice she was able to come back.
Congratulations to ALL the women today.

I hosted 5 of my friends for a skating brunch. All but one of us are skating fanatics but she knew there would be mimosas and lots of chocolate.
Some of our observations:
Mao Asada was splendid.
Either Akiko Suziki was overscored or Polina Edmunds was underscored. Their placement should have been switched.
Carolina Kostner had the Olympics she has dreamed about since before Torino. (I first saw her at the Worlds in 2003. Even then she skated with such power and was doing triple-triple) She is both graceful and athletic.
We were surprised Yuna Kim did not have more technical content. She and her coaches had to know the Russians would be "bringing it" in the technical department. She gave that long program away. No one glides across the ice like she does
Ashley Wagner had the most unattractive dress in the entire competition. She has said repeatedly that she can do a triple-triple yet in every competition she under-rotates, 2 foots, or leaves it out.
Gracie and Polina are the future of US skating. (hear that Ashley)
If you do not understand the new scoring system, more than likely you would have awarded the gold medal to a different skater. Our friend who is not a fan, did not understand how someone who falls can end up higher than someone who skates a cleaner program. She chose Yuna and Carolina for gold and silver.
Tara, Johnny and Terry were great.
