Keurig water filter starter kit question

I am just getting my new tsv Keurig up and running. I am looking at the water filter starter kit that came with it and am wondering if it is necessary to use it it when you use filtered or purified water. I was kind of turned off by the black water that appeared when I soaked my filter in it. Any opinions from users one way or the other? Does the filter change the flavor? Are there any other tips that you can pass on to this first time Keurig user? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Smile
