He's still in the middle of his speech. How do you assess he has done? I think his tone of deep respect for his mother's achievement will sit well. His praise for her sense of duty, tradition, service, guiding faith, speaks to the weight he'll give those virtues in his own reign.
"The nation changes, our values remain constant". Reaching out. Nice acknowledgment of an evolving Britain, while remaining moored in the highest goals of British tradition.
He made sure that Camilla gets her due-- "my darling wife.... Queen Consort"....
Affection for family-- paramount.
William becomes Prince of Wales!
Good speech, in my 'umble opinion.

And did anyone thing Willliam would be declared Prince of Wales right in this first speech? Interesting.

Isn't the heir automatically POW? I don't think he has to be appointed or named to assume that slot.

I could care less about his "address". Someone wrote proper words for him to say. Lost any respect for him many years ago. His mother was an amazing woman who took her duties seriously. She made many sacrifices for the benefit of her country and the world. She will be missed.

I watched the speech and felt that Charles hit the right notes, and tone. Deep respect and love for his mother, family and country.
No, it did not surprise me that he declared William Prince of Wales, because the news mentioned yesterday that it would be happening.

I kind of thought he would have waited till the end of the mourning period.

I had the impression yesterday that this was all automatic as well, but I did not want to mention in case I was incorrect. Some take such pleasure in correcting people for minor errors.

A respectful address from a loving son. "God Save the King."

@Sooner, the designation isn't automatic. It's at the discretion of the monarch, and I suppose can theoretically be bestowed at any time deemed appropriate.
While of course knowing it would happen, I found it interesting that it would be officially announced by Charles, in his very first speech in his new role. It's a nice, early vote of confidence for William...

From yesterday news coverage I thought that it was automatic, but that he would officially be announcing it within a few days.
