I like cumin and use it too but I usually just use it with Tex Mex or Mexican style foods. I just never thought of putting it in a salad like that. It is a good idea.
Cumin is also used a lot in Indian food.

I do love Indian food but it is not something I cook at home a lot. We leave Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Indian to the experts in my house. Lol... I do love to cook and cook often but these cuisines I never have a lot of luck with taste wise compared to what we get when we eat out. Dal is the only thing I have made with great success.

*Love* Dal used to make it often! Agree that it's better to get those you listed at a restaurant, they're a lot of trouble. We have a good friend who's Thai and had his own restaurant at one time, he's a great cook. Anthony Bourdain just did a CNN food travel show about rural Thai dishes. Brave guy, I would not have tried some of those. I saw the show last night, if you're interested it will play again, I'm sure.
I decided to try Middle Eastern cooking. Wow... heavy duty spices. I went back to getting that out, too.

My curry isn't bad if I do say so myself however I got several cooking lessons from the spouse of my husband's colleague. Most people will not take the time to roast the spices, grind them down etc. By the way, Edenfoods.com has some decent prices on bulk amounts of the grains we have been discussing.

I don't even care for the Spinach in salads but I eat it. lol. And PS) At one of my old jobs I used to decorate the bowls of cold food IN the case WITH kale.
There's not enough "spicy coco sauce" to drown out the taste/feel of eating kale! That sauce is coconut milk, onions, cinnamon, cumin, cracked black pepper, and sriracha sauce and it is yummy! But, my body absolutely revolts when I try to swallow the kale........
I think kale is best as a decoration!

I get a little afraid to try to cook new cuisines especially when you can spend a ton of money on the spices alone and not be guaranteed a good outcome. I love AB and I just watched his Thailand show. He is fearless when eating and really reminds me of my father. I do try everything at least once but some of the stuff he tries, not just the food but the lack of hygiene in some of the places really grosses me out. Anthony and Andrew Zimmerman have stomachs made of steel! I have all of AB shows set for my DVR. I really enjoy him and his sense of humor. I like how he goes to the real places, not just capital cities.

Thanks Sydney! I am checking out their website now.

I tear it up in little pieces or chiffonade it and put in salad, soups, or saute the way you did, Noel.
There are different varieties of kale. Some are less bitter, to me, at least.
We are inundated with it here at the Farmers markets.
My favorite local restaurant makes what they call a Brutus Salad...roasted kale, garlic. Super good, especially if you love garlic!
It was a staple growing up in my house too so I just kept fixing it the way my mom did which I already knew I liked. She was big on all kinds of greens as well and I still love them sometimes with just a little vinegar is the way it taste the best to me.
We must be from the same family. ![]()
I salivate when I see a huge beautiful bunch of kale or chard. I always buy more than I can eat so then I give some away. It's beautiful to me.
I know I know, I'm nuts. ![]()
But I see these veggies as the food of life. They are so good for us and my body craves them.

Noel, OT but do you watch Orphan Black?
OH, ABSOLUTELY! Are you another fan? LOVE that show, it's brilliant.
So who's a kale fan there? The one married to Donny?
Yep, I'm a fan, but I got behind on season 1, and have some episodes that I DVRed to still watch. And with season 2 here, I have even more episodes I've DVRed! Great series. I thought you were probably watching it, since I think I remember you posting on a somewhat similar subject once. I don't know if you ever got the chance to watch the movie "Never Let Me Go" that I recommended awhile back, but I think you would like it. It's based on the book (same title) by Kazuo Ishiguro. I've only seen the movie, and haven't read the book. Loved the movie.
Laughed at your comment asking who the kale fan from Orphan Black is - sorry for seemingly suggesting that! I was just going Off Topic when asking you about Orphan Black. ha ha I posted the same question under your thread about new tv series starting, but I don't think you saw it. :-)
