Re: Just when I thought I had heard everything

Wait, the whole time they were there she only saw the boyfriend twice when he took her for lunch?  She never saw the inside of their house?  She was on her own alone in that camper the entire visit?

What on earth????  That is the weirdest thing I've ever heard of.   I can't believe she stayed there.

Re: Just when I thought I had heard everything

It seems that posters either don't care to actually read the posts from others or don't understand what read.

The OP saidlunch a few times. Few means three or more. Also, the OP never said the boyfriend only saw her for lunch. It's unknown how much time  he spent or didn't spend with her. How could the niece know that during the four days she wouldn't be invited into the house to shower, join them for dinner, or watch a movie before the four days came and went?

Re: Just when I thought I had heard everything

The definition of a few is a small number, not many but more than one. It could be 2 or more but not one. Whether he took her out to lunch  2 or 3 times is immaterial to me. During the course of those 4 days at some point she had to have realized that she was not allowed to go into the house. If this story is true and I am beginning to have my doubts, this 30 year old "smart mechanical engineer" acted more like a timid child to put up with this treatment from someone whom she hopes to marry.

@occasionalrain The OP says he took her out to lunch a couple of times, not a few.

Re: Just when I thought I had heard everything

Even if he visited her in the trailer numerous times during the four days, it shouldn’t matter. She should’ve left once it became clear that she was not welcome to stay in the house, period

@mamaslittlepotato

You're right and I'm wrong. I should have re-read the op before I posted. Lesson learned.

Wow I think that's very weird.  Why was she not invited into the house?  Were they afraid of covid?  This makes no sense since they drove up together and he spent time in the house with his parents.  I would have been very uncomfortable about the whole situation if it were me!

So what did your neice say to her boyfriend about this?

@haddon9   They didn't drive.  They flew to Virginia where his parents reside.  The OP does not indicate where he and her niece are residing.

I think the guy is married, and he passed her off as a "business colleague"...

@Desertdi   I do not see it that way.

First, why would he tell her he wants her to meet his family??

His parents have to know he is married so how would he explain bringing another woman with him?

There would be no reason for him to tell them in advance other than he was bringing a woman he has been dating.

This was a "vacation" of sorts; passing her off as a business associate makes no sense.  A business associate would not be needed nor would it be necessary to meet his parents.

Re: Just when I thought I had heard everything

I think he did intend to propose and wanted his parents to meet her. I doubt he would have brought her had he any idea his parents would have treated her as they did.  Why he stayed once he knew the situation is strange, as is not discussing the situation with his girlfriend and deciding together what to do...

My niece, age 30, has been dating a guy for several months. They seem to be crazy about each other. His parents live in Virginia and he asked her to go there with him to meet them.

She was elated since she thinks he is going to propose soon and she is already looking at dresses, etc. They flew out there a couple of weeks ago and when they pulled up to the house, she saw a cute little camping trailer parked out front in the driveway. She thought the parents were very welcoming and nice. Then things changed. She discovered the trailer was where she was expected to stay during their visit. It had a tiny hotplate and cube fridge and microwave, toilet, sink, but no shower. His mother proudly showed her the groceries she had stocked the trailer with so she could make whatever she liked to eat. They knew she would be bored while they and their son caught up with each other after not seeing one another since COVID, so they thought providing her with her own, private space would be nice. They had plenty of space and several bedrooms in their home. She was very upset and told me she made the best of it. Slept alone out in the camper and her boyfriend took her out for lunch a couple of times....but she went without a shower for four days they were there.....and was never invited into the house; what would you think? He seemed to think it was a wonderful, hospitable thing to do....I would kick this guy to the curb. I hope he doesn't propose. They sound like the in-laws from you-know -where.

@Duckncover   How did she know there were several bedrooms?

How was electricity provided to use the hotplate and to keep the mini-cube cold?

What about the weather?  Hot?  Cold?  Snow? Rain?

Not that I expect you to return with an update.

But thanks for a fun thread.
