The pharmacist just told me that when she tried to fill a prescription for me, that it came up on her computer that it was denied because my insurance company wanted me to start taking only one pill a day of a med I'm on instead of two!   I've never heard of such a thing.   Has anyone else?     I will obviously have to call the insurance company on Monday and try to find out about this.     Any help is appreciated.   Thank you.

Wow, that is just so wrong @newjersey  My suggestion would be to let your doctor know, perhaps she or he could call them on this.

If your MD thinks you need two pills, that's what you need.  It makes me very angry that an insurance company would try to cheat you out of what you need.

Yes, it's happened to me before. They base what they cover on the recommended dosage. For instance, PPI's are dosed once a day. If your doctor wants you to take it twice a day, they have to get authorization through the insurance company. That would require 60'pills instead of 30. Same thing with hormone patches. The recommended dose is to change twice a week. That's all they will cover. If you burn through it faster, your doc has to get authorization for more than twice a week, I.e., more patches than 8/month. It's been going on for a long time. You've probably never had a RX outside the normal dosage before. What has gotten worse is now some will not allow for override. If a pill can be cut, your doc can write a RX for twice the dose and you can cut it in half. Been there, done that.

@ScarletDove, you're right.   Thanks.   I will.    This is really really strange.

Insurance companies are wielding more power.  And who can blame them - they're paying the bills.  Let your doctor duke it out with them.  I appreciate their efforts to hold a line on costs and - in theory at least - on insurance premiums.  It ain't easy!

@JaneMarple, I'll find out soon - hopefully.   Strange if this is true, cause the insurance company always covered it before.   Thanks for your reply.

@PurpleBunny, wow!   That's just wrong.  I take it someone else filled the prescription for you??  Wonder how this person kept her job?

@AKgirl2, I'm not sure if it was a pharmacist or a tech.   I just called CVS back now, spoke to the same person, and told her I really can't understand why/how an insurance company call tell anyone how much medicine he/she should take.   The CVS person told me she has heard of this before.   I know I haven't.   I'll call my doctor and insurance company Monday and see what happens.  Now I'll fret and be anxious about this all weekend.

@newjersey ~ I would ask to speak directly with the pharmacist, not pharmacy tech and see what he/she says.  This has never happened to me, so I'm skeptical of the information she gave you.  If pharmacist says the same thing, I'd Google the insurance co/dosage question.  Try not to worry, I'm sure your Dr. can take care of this one way or another.

Re: Just received an odd call from CVS Pharmacy.

Insurance companies are definitely cracking down. We recently had a call telling us that our insurance no longer covered a topical cream and if we wanted to continue purchasing it, it would be $275 a tube! Previously, we have been paying $19 a tube, with insurance.  Such a scam.
