Re: Just received an odd call from CVS Pharmacy.

Having worked in a pharmacy for several years, I can say that this is not uncommon. For example: one of my meds I need 20mg once in the morning and once at night. Insurance won't cover. However, they will cover a 40mg which I split to get 20mg for each dose.

Sometimes the insurance will not cover a med because it has been shown that in that amount it "could" be overdosing. The doctor can asked for a prior authorization and then the insurance will probably pay.

Those are but two examples that I could give.

Even if it is one of the techs that calls, they do so at the instruction of the RPh. Most often, the RPh does the calling. Our pharmacy was so busy, it was usually a tech that relayed the message. However, if the patient/customer desired to speak to the pharmacist, the RPh always complied.

It's funny how CVS pharmacist will pass the buck to the tech's to call with just a message without an explanation in case the customer asks.  When I got a call about my prescription situation I asked "WHY" and she said, "I don't know I was asked to make the call", when I asked to speak to a Pharmcist she said no one was available, I asked for a call back and she said she couldn't guarantee one....  I told her I was going to call my company Benefit's Center and maybe they could do some investigating to get me an answer and also research other pharmacies the company could switch to.....................she said "that's your choice"!!

Insurance companies are wielding more power.  And who can blame them - they're paying the bills.  Let your doctor duke it out with them.  I appreciate their efforts to hold a line on costs and - in theory at least - on insurance premiums.  It ain't easy!

I disagree.  Most of the time the people making the decision at the insurance company isn't even close to qualified to be making those decisions as to what is medically necessary or not.

I agree with you it's one of those "follow the money things"
it appears that the insurance and pharmacy companies are all in cahoots with one another, this came out on those 2 cases that were in the news a while back....it seems that BOTH the pharmacy and insurance companies should listen to your DOCTOR that has worked up your medical profile and knows what you need!!!!
