I was wondering why some posters refer to the female hosts as hostesses. They call themselves hosts, and it's not like they are seating you at a restaurant.

Because it was the way I was brought up to say....
Male - host
Female - hostess
======
21st century
Male/Female - Hosts
Male/Female - Actors

@QVCkitty1. Don't have a clue. I call them all hosts. It's like waiters and waitresses have all become wait people, I guess...gender neutral kind of thing.

@QVCkitty1, we must have both seen the same post today. :-)

Youre showing your age if you use sexist occupational titles. Back in the 60s or 70s, the US Department of Labor eliminated them from the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, which describes and classifies all jobs performed in the US. A waitress is now a server, a stewardess is a flight attendant, a mailman is now a carrier, etc., etc. Surely you've noticed? Hence, a hostess at QVC is a host (male or female). A nurse is a nurse, male or female.

Jane Treacy used to say that they are called " hosts", because Hostess makes cupcakes. It also sounds very dated, sort of like saying "stewardess".
