Re: Just Had a 4.8 Earthquake

Saw your quake on the USGS site. I have been looking several times a day as there seem to be quite a few swarms in the state. Glad you had no damage.

What brought you to Alaska? My sister lived there about 35 years ago. I never did get to visit but my parents went. Everyone loves Alaska. Do you love it?

Moved to be close to family.  It's a great place to visit for sure, lots to see.  Alaska feels like its own country, I refer it to living on a different planet...your thousands of miles away from the rest of the U.S.  People have their own way of life here.  Not a senior friendly state as far as healthcare, insurances, and the cost of living is very high.  Then there are the long dark winters, short summers with 20hrs of daylight, and earthquakes, which is the main reason I would like to move back to the lower 48 sooner than later.  Who knows what the future holds?

Re: Just Had a 4.8 Earthquake

My first earthquake was in the 50s.  Bunkbed slid across the bedroom and top bunk was on me. Read about the Compton quake (called LongBeach) from papers my GMOM saved and letters from  my GAunt in Michigan.  I have always been scared spitless of these things.

My 1st on my own, had 2 babies, DH just left for work. It was 70,71.  Put my oldest (2yrs) in hallway with packed diaper bag, formula, diapers, etc, tiny baby with me. Hoping DH would come home, idiot thought it was car.

Sylmar, hit the door frame (out of a dead sleep) before quake hit.

It is and always will be on mind. Everywhere I am, every building I am in, or won't go in.

Live in Az now. DMom said no quakes here. HA!!!!!!!  Watching episode of the Walking Dead, Morgan and Peaceful Man in woods. My stomach flips, my legs are melting onto couch, going, no way, no way, no way.  Didn't say anything to DH, check online. WAY,way, way, now my Peace is once again gone.

Sorry, so long, told you in another thread I was nuts.-----------tedEbear

I'm still shaking (in my boots) from the 1st quake I experienced here in AK.  I did experience 3 others, 1 in CA., 1 in Puerto Rico and 1 in NY.  They were nothing compared to the quakes here.

Re: Just Had a 4.8 Earthquake

I'm glad you are ok.  I experienced one very mild earthquake in my lifetime -- thought I was just having a dizzy spell as everything was swaying.  I can only imagine how frightening a more severe quake is like.

Oh, my.  Not sure I could ever live in an area that was earthquake prone without being heavily medicatedWoman LOL

@Plaid Pants2Glad it was just a small one!  Did your kitties react in anyway?  Just curious about that.

I'm on the East coast (in Maryland) and a few years back we had a "small" quake (I forget the intensity), and I was busy cleaning.  I noticed the floor seemed to roll underneath my feet and the fireplace screen fell over.  In my confusion, I thought the washing machine had gotten out of balance!Woman LOL

Even though it was small, it rattled me for several days.  My insides tensed up every time I thought of it.

The damage done to the Washington Monument and National Cathedral was extensive.  We had cracks in our walls.  And this was a small one.

I cannot imagine having them on a regular basis.

Re: Just Had a 4.8 Earthquake

There is a direct correlation between the practice of fracking to quakes.

Alameda county in CA has just voted to ban it. Not only does it cause quakes, but it endangers the water supply. This is not a political issue, so be sure to study about this and be aware.
