For months DH and I have been sorting packing, readying for 'big' final move to be near our kids.
We have huge artwork collection, sculptures, books English fine china, crystal glasses, books - you name it not to mention photos, Xmas decorations and years and years of invoices, bills. I am looking at about 24 large packed cartons and more to go. Very tiring and emotional.
Family say they want this piece of furniture and that painting but do they really? Do we pay between $10 to $15,000 movers fees plus storage at new destination - as we are downsizing - awaiting kids to sort out what they want or not it seems their wants change weekly.
Today I made the jump - called in a house clearance/sales very nice, highly recommended local lady who - not bragging - was very enthusiastic about our home contents - and DH and I have decided to sell the lot! Sales Lady told us the dealers sale would be first and she knew they would be very interested.
Forget what the kids do and do not want- which changes daily- there are a few exceptions sentimental paintings and sculptures which will adorn our new much smaller home plus we will purchase new furniture what we need there.
The relief of this decision is enormous - now have to phone kids - who all own their own homes fully furnished - and guess what - we now start unpacking as everything going into sale. What does not sell goes to local Animal Shelter thrift shop. My main worry now - will I feel the same tomorrow / sale will be in August. Help!

@dulwich----If the kids really wanted something, they would have said "I want the dogs playing poker picture". If they didn't, they don't want it. Sell it and use the money for something you and DH want.-----------tedEbear

I think it's a great idea.

@dulwichI applaud you for making the decision and acting. Anyone who hasn't downsized significantly or moved recently just has no idea of both the physical and mental work involved.

Sounds terrific -- keep it up and good luck.

You are doing exactly what DH and I are getting ready to do. Estate Sale is definitely the way to go.

@dulwich. I bet you'll feel a great sense of relief when this burden of too much stuff is lifted from your shoulders.

After my mother and father died, I cleared out their home and called a auction house to take the big items- furniture, crystal, china, paintings and more. My parents lived a very different lifestyle and had different taste than myself. I kept things that were important to me. I don't feel you need to spend money to ship items for your children. Let them pay for the shipping or come and take it themselves.

Do what you wish.
My Mom has gotten rid of things that I would have liked, but I respect her desire to live as she pleases, when she pleases.
It will all be water under the bridge.

That has to be the best feeling!
Good for you for making this decision,
definitely a weight off your shoulders.
Good luck w/ the move!
