One of the companies I work for does extensive background checks before interviews.  Be prepared to answer anything they might uncover in that process.

Jesus!  That's horrible Di.

There are times when you must speak, not because you are going to change the opposing side, but because if you do not speak, they have changed you.

We bring in about 4.  We screen out probably 3/4 just based on their (crappy) resumes.

@Bird mama   Oh Bernie.....that was nothing.    I got a letter from one company just stating that I "was unfit for employment".    I assume it was written by a person with a poor command of the English language, and "maybe" the person meant I didn't have the right qualifications for the job.   di

It's really sad that there are people out there that are so unprofessional, and that are put in the role of interviewing people.

I had experiences like that, where I was interviewed by people who were asking questions that were both illegal and unprofessional.

I was really appalled, but I did my best to get through those types of interviews.

I have been on the other side where I have interviewed people, so I know what types of questions and comments someone is allowed to ask or make to someone they're interviewing.

desertDi I would have shown that letter to the head of HR just to make sure they were

aware of that unprofessional person that wrote it.  Hopefully it did not come from them.

Do you know if having a LinkedIn profile helps your chances of actually getting an interview?

In my opinion, I think that it can help you in terms of possibly networking with people that you may know, depending on how you set up your page.

If you set your page up where you put in your work history with the companies where you work, it will then go and then search out those companies and look for others who worked at those same companies when you did, too.

That is a really cool feature that it has, I think. Then it will ask you if you know "soandso" from "suchandsuch" company. You can then check and see if you do.

My husband has done this and has connected with some people over the years that he didn't have contact info. for, and was able to do it due to LinkedIn. They were able to find each other this way.

First of all, that is illegal.  Age discrimination is as wrong as race or gender discrimination...

Second of all, I would see that as a blessing in disguise because they let you know, by saying that stuff, that it would be a HORRIBLE company to work for!!!
